The Hounds pitching, propelled the school to its third College World Series appearance. Included in that pitching rotation were, Brandon DeWitt and Seth Spencer, who both recieved all GLVC honors. He also brought in Brady Ware who became the first known player in collegiate or professional baseball to throw a no-hitter and hit for the cycle in the same game. (April 7, 2023 vs. Drury).

In August 2019, Cornwell joined the University of Dayton baseball staff following a one-year stay as an assistant coach/pitching coach at Iona College. Cornwell mentored pitchers, Stephen Hansen and Hunter Sibley, to All-MAAC accolades, and set a program record for strikeouts in a season in his lone season with the Gaels.

As a player, Cornwell spent three seasons at UIndy where he was a starting pitcher. In his three years with the Greyhounds, he lead the team to a pair of NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, and pitched in the team's GLVC Tournament championship game win over Rockhurst in 2016. After the 2016 season, Cornwell transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, and later signed  for the Traverse City Beach Bums in the Frontier League during the 2018 season.
