Alex Vela enters his first season as a graduate assistant for the UIndy baseball team. Previously he was the starting shortshop for the team for three years, while carrying a career .328 batting average over those three seasons. As a senior in 2022, he led the team in doubles, was second in batting average, and was third in slugging percentage. Over his time he was awarded three Academic All-GLVC awards, alongside a 2022 All-GLVC second team nomination his senior season.Â
Prior to UIndy, he spent two seasons at Ivy Tech, where he carried a slash line of .357/.489/.511 with 51 RBI's and 55 stolen bases. For his efforts he was awarded team MVP and the Titan award at Ivy Tech his second year. The Titan award was renamed the "Alex Vela Titan Award" along with his jersey No. 22 being retired, after his departure.Â
