Chris Keevers

Chris Keevers has established the University of Indianapolis as one of NCAA Division II football’s most consistent championship programs since becoming head coach in 2019, continuing a decades-long influence on Greyhound football that began when he joined the staff in 1994. Under Keevers, UIndy has captured five Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championships, including an active streak of four consecutive titles, while maintaining a national presence and sustained postseason success.

The 2025 season stands as arguably the finest in program history. Indianapolis finished No. 10 in the final AFCA Division II Coaches Poll—the highest final ranking the program has ever achieved—after matching a school record with 11 victories. The Greyhounds recorded multiple milestones, including their first fourth-straight playoff appearance, first second-round home playoff game, and first Harlon Hill Trophy finalist.

Keevers’ teams have paired championship results with elite roster production. That same season produced 26 All-GLVC selections, four All-Super Region 3 honorees, and two First-Team All-Americans, underscoring the program’s national footprint.

The momentum was built the year prior when Keevers guided Indianapolis to a 10-2 record, perfect 8-0 conference mark, GLVC championship and AFCA No. 14 national ranking, earning conference Coach of the Year honors while mentoring major award winners on both sides of the ball.

Among the program’s premier player-development stories is linebacker Clay Schulte, who captured both Super Region 3 Defensive Player of the Year and GLVC Defensive Player of the Year honors before being named AFCA First-Team All-America after a 100-tackle senior campaign.

Quarterback Gavin Sukup emerged as another national figure, becoming the program’s first-ever Harlon Hill finalist while helping power one of the most successful seasons in school history.

Keevers’ leadership has consistently translated into conference-wide recognition. In 2023, he was voted GLVC Coach of the Year after directing a 9–2 squad to the league title, a national ranking, and an NCAA playoff berth while guiding 22 players to all-conference honors, including 14 first-team selections.
His overall head coaching record sits at 58-14—the best winning percentage in program history—further reflecting the stability and competitive standard that now define UIndy football.

Yet Keevers’ impact on the Greyhounds extends well beyond his head coaching tenure. Prior to taking over the program, he served in numerous roles—including 12 seasons as defensive coordinator—helping lay the foundation for a championship culture that has produced double-digit win seasons and regular postseason appearances.

Since the GLVC began sponsoring football, Keevers has been part of 11 conference championship teams, illustrating a rare blend of longevity and sustained excellence within one program.

Before Indianapolis, Keevers coached defensive line, special teams, and strength & conditioning at Saint Mary’s College (Calif.) and began his coaching career at Purdue—his alma mater—as a graduate and student assistant.

A former defensive lineman, Keevers started his collegiate playing career at Coffeyville Community College before transferring to Purdue University, where he became a two-year starter and competed alongside future Pro Football Hall of Famer Rod Woodson.

An Indianapolis native and graduate of John Marshall High School, Keevers earned both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Purdue. He and his wife, Alexis, have four children.
