Kenny Ray Augustus

Kenny Ray Augustus begins his 12th season as the UIndy Defensive Line Coach in 2017. Also the team’s Special Teams Coordinator, "Coach Gus” is a 1999 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he manned the defensive line for the Bearcats in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Augustus has coached numerous all-conference d-linemen in his time at UIndy, including three-time All-GLVC First Team honoree Lee Campbell (2013-15). Previously, Coach Gus mentored all-league first-team performers such as Vince Maida (2013), Jovone Jordan (2012), Randall Courtney (2009) and Jimmy Fleshman (2006-07). Before Augustus’ arrival in 2006, UIndy had not had a first-team all-conference defensive lineman since ‘01.

Coach Augustus’ defensive line helped the 2015 Greyhounds to a fourth consecutive GLVC championship and NCAA DII playoff berth while helping the team to 71 tackles for a loss - most for the Hounds since 2005.

In addition to his duties at UIndy, Augustus has twice participated in the NFL's Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship. Named after the late Hall of Fame coach who conceived the idea, the program exposes talented minority college coaches to the methods and philosophies of summer NFL training camps.

As part of the program, Augustus interned with the San Diego Chargers In the summer of 2010, then worked the Carolina Panthers' training camp in 2012. He also helped the Chargers' coaching staff with personnel interviews & player evaluations during the 2012 NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Augustus again brushed shoulders with the NFL when he received one of only 30 NCAA invitations to attend the first-ever NCAA-NFL Football Academy. Held over four days in Orlando, Fla., in February of 2011, the Academy was developed to provide individuals with the necessary tools and networking opportunities to enhance their chances at success in the football coaching industry.

As a player, Augustus spent his final two seasons at UC after two years at Joliet (Ill.) Junior College. There, Augustus earned Junior College All-America honors after his sophomore campaign.

Prior to coming to UIndy, Kenny Ray spent time assisting at a juvenile treatment center. He and his wife Amber currently reside in Westfield, Ind.
