Coach Engle

Michael Engle

Michael Engle joined the Greyhound staff in 2022 as the Quarterbacks Coach and Passing Game Coordinator. He took over Offensive Coordinator duties in 2024 and added Assistant Head Coach to his title in 2025.

Engle has helped lead the Greyhounds to a GLVC title and an NCAA DII playoff appearance each of the four seasons he has been on staff. The 2025 campaign marked arguably the greatest in program history, at least in the Division II era. For his part, Engle orchestrated one of the nation's most prolific offenses, with the Greyhounds ranking second in Division II in both total offense (500.3 ypg) and scoring offense (46.0 ppg). UIndy also ranked in the top 10 in DII in passing offense, third-down conversion percentage and red zone offense. UIndy won its playoff opener and ultimately earned its highest-ever position in the final coaches poll.

Engle also mentored senior quarterback Gavin Sukup to a record-breaking season in 2025. The first-ever three-time GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Sukup led all Division II QBs in completion percentage and passing efficiency while ranking second in passing TDs and fourth in passing yards. Sukup also was voted the runner-up for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy and was named to the All-America First Team by the AFCA. He finished his time at UIndy as the school's single-season and career record holder in both touchdown passes and passing yards.

Prior to coming to UIndy, Engle spent two seasons working with both the QBs and wide receivers at DePauw University, his alma mater. He helped guide the Tigers to a 12-3 record in that span, including winning the program's first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference title and notching its first-ever NCAA DIII playoff win. Another highlight came on Senior Day of 2021 when the Tigers racked up a school-record 502 passing yards in a rout of visiting Oberlin, securing the NCAC title outright and earning the league's automatic bid to the playoffs.

Engle gained further experience at a number of schools, including Bryant (WR coach), West Virginia Wesleyan (Associate HC, OC, QB coach), and more-recently three seasons at Division II Florida Tech (Special Teams Coordinator, WR Coach).

As a student-athlete at DePauw, Engle was a team captain and all-conference quarterback, leading the Tigers to a conference championship and playoff appearance in 2011. He graduated with six school records and still holds single-season program marks for passing yards (3,180) and passing touchdowns (30).
