Todd Carter begins his ninth season on the Greyhound staff in 2016 and seventh as the team’s offensive coordinator. Carter, a former letterwinner at DePauw University, returned to Central Indiana in the spring of 2008 after spending three seasons at GLIAC-power Saginaw Valley State.
Already with two seasons as the UIndy offensive line coach under his belt, Carter added offensive coordinator duties to his plate in 2010. Over the last four years, his play-calling has netted the Greyhounds the four highest single-season point totals in program history, a span that includes four GLVC titles and three NCAA D-II playoff appearances.
Carter’s offense has averaged more than 30 points per game for five consecutive seasons, hanging 33.5 points per on the board last year. The ‘15 Greyhounds led Division II in completion percentage (.689), while ranking second in turnovers lost (7), fifth in red zone offense percentage (.912) and sixth in fewest sacks allowed pere (0.83).
In 2012, Carter’s offensive scheme set a number of new standards at UIndy, including new single-season records for wins (10), touchdowns (61), points in a season (461) and total offense (5,518). The offensive unit also ranked third in all of Division II in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.46 spg).
Furthermore, Carter’s 2012 offensive line opened holes for Harlon Hill candidate Klay Fiechter, who racked up 1,475 rushing yards to set a new UIndy single-season record. An impressive four Greyhound o-lineman were named First Team All-GLVC, including team captain Andrew Mansaray, who also picked up Academic All-America honors for the second straight year.
Carter has mentored a number of successful offensive lineman at UIndy; All told, 24 UIndy o-linemen have received all-conference accolades under his tutelage, while Tim Dury (2009) and Eric Quintana (2010) both played in the Cactus Bowl – the NCAA Division II equivalent of the Senior Bowl.
Before joining the UIndy staff, Carter was part of an SVSU team that reached the NCAA Division II Northwest Region finals in 2005 after a one-loss regular-season campaign, with the only two losses of the year coming to eventual-national champion Grand Valley State. The Cardinals finished ranked No. 2 in the nation that season.
At SVSU, Carter was in charge of the offensive line and was the team’s run-game coordinator. Carter came to SVSU from North Park University in Chicago, Ill., where he served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach from June 2003 to March 2005. Carter was involved in many aspects of the program, including recruiting and special teams. At North Park, Carter was also the equipment manager and was responsible for travel plans.
Prior to his stint at North Park, Carter served for two years at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., as the offensive line coach and also served as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach. He worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Connecticut from June 2000 to April 2001 and also at his alma mater DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., from 1998-2000.
Carter received his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in physical education and secondary education from DePauw in 1998 and went on to earn his master’s degree in secondary education from Indiana State University in 2002. Carter was a four-year varsity letterman and a two-year starter at center and tackle at DePauw. He was named the team captain and dubbed all-conference at center in 1997.
