INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis softball team fended off a late-game surge from Missouri-St. Louis to take a 4-3 win in Saturday's opener, only to fall 3-1 to the Tritons in game two. Senior
Maggie Swanson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the first game.
GAME 1
UIndy starter
Amanda Wendlinger cruised through six innings, facing just two over the minimum while striking out four. Her effort was aided by a pair of line drives to third that
Cat Sampson parlayed into double plays.
Meanwhile, the Greyhound offense scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 advantage. The highlight came when Swanson sent a dart to right-center that hit halfway up on the fence and brought
Jamie Keltz in all the way from first. Swanson would later score on an opposite-field hit from
Ashley Boxley.
With the Hounds up four in the seventh frame, the Tritons made a push to extend the game with a final-inning rally. A catcher's interference was sandwiched between two singles, loading the bases with nobody out.
The Tritons (11-10) chased Wendlinger with a two-run single by the next batter, and with freshman
Kaitlyn Bolanowski in the circle, UMSL plated another with a single to make it 4-3 Hounds.
After Bolanowski recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt, Coach Frost-Fisher gave the ball to
Megan Russell. The junior hurler came on with runners on second and third and only one down, but Russell calmly garnered a strike out and a ground out to give the Hounds the win and earn the save.
GAME 2
Four Greyhound errors and the pitching of UMSL senior Allyson DeFosset combined to hand UIndy a 3-1 loss in the capper. All three Triton runs were deemed unearned while DeFosset went the distance and struck out 10 to earn the “W”.
The Hounds did coax five walks in the game but didn't record a hit until Keltz earned a bunt single in the sixth inning.
After all that, Indianapolis managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Boxley led off the inning by taking the second pitch she saw deep over the left field fence to make it 3-1.
Later, with one down, shortstop
Carmen Martinez singled up the middle to continue to rally, but at first base she would stay as DeFosset retired the next two hitters to salvage a split for the Tritons.
UIndy (9-9) remains home for two conference games Sunday when it hosts Missouri S&T. Doubleheader action from Indiana Central Little League starts at noon.
