INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis softball team outscored the Missouri S&T Lady Miners 18-2 in two wins Sunday at Indiana Central Little League. The Greyhounds run-ruled S&T with a five-inning 10-1 win the first game, and later notched an 8-1 victory to earn the sweep.
Maggie Swanson finished the day with eight RBI, while
Jamie Keltz had a triple and three runs scored.
Game 1
The Lady Miners (5-12, 0-4 GLVC) got their lead-off hitter on in each of the first three innings, but could only manage one run over that span. S&T loaded the bases with one out in the first, but UIndy starter
Megan Russell got a big strikeout for the all-important second out. Russell then induced a ground ball to escape the inning with just one run allowed, despite three Miner doubles in the frame.
Down 1-0, the Hounds' bats came alive to hang five on the board in both the second and fourth innings. Swanson blasted a homerun in each frame, with a two-run shot in the second and a three-run bomb in the fourth.
Other offensive highlights included a two-run double from Keltz and a two-run homer from
Cat Sampson.
After earning a save yesterday, Russell collected the win as the first-inning run proved to be the only one she allowed in the abbreviated affair.
Game 2
Indianapolis (11-9, 3-1) kept the runs coming in the second game by jumping ahead 4-0 through two innings. Keltz opened the game with an opposite-field triple and scored on a Swanson single. Maggie picked up two more ribbies with a two-run single the very next inning.
Later with UIndy up 6-1, Keltz walked and stole second in the sixth, but on her steal attempt, the catcher's throw to second sailed the bag and centerfielder couldn't corral the ball, allowing Keltz to come all the way around the bases without the benefit of a hit.
Two batters later, Russell smoked a fly over the fence to punctuate the game's scoring and ensure the sweep.
Like Russell in the first game, UIndy starter
Meagan Gutierrez needed no help finishing the game. The sophomore hurler struck out four in seven innings of work, while the lone Lady Miner run was unearned.
The Greyhounds hit the road next weekend with doubleheaders at Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside Mar. 21-22, respectively. Both Saturday and Sunday feature 1 p.m. start times.
