SOMERS, Wis.- UIndy's softballers earned another split on the weekend, defeating Wisconsin-Parkside in game one of a GLVC doubleheader before dropping game two of the day. The Greyhounds' second split of the weekend runs their record to 13-11 overall, 5-3 in conference play.
GAME 1
UIndy needed nine innings to earn a 3-1 win in the day's opener. Neither team put a run on the board until the sixth inning, when the host Rangers pushed a single run across on a pair of hits and a passed ball. The Greyhounds tied the game in the seventh inning, when
Megan Russell homered to left center.
UIndy took the win in the ninth inning, with
Chrissy Stephens' first collegiate home run. Stephens hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to score
Carmen Martinez and herself and give the Greyhounds the 3-1 win.
Russell earned the win in the circle for UIndy, striking out nine in her nine innings of work to improve her record to 6-4 on the season.
Jessica Breeden and Stephens each had a pair of hits in the first game for the Greyhounds.
GAME 2
Both teams found their offense in the nightcap, with the Rangers edging UIndy 8-7 with a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning. UIndy jump-started the game's scoring, putting up a pair of runs in the first frame.
Maggie Swanson came up with the first run on a solo homer to centerfield, and Breeden (pictured) took credit for the second run, on an RBI triple that scored
Ashley Boxley.
The Greyhounds added one more run in the second inning, with Martinez coming around to score on a wild pitch after singling up the middle. Wisconsin-Parkside cut the UIndy lead to one in its half of the second, plating two runs on a homerun by Lisa Casey.
UIndy and the Rangers each added runs in the third frame, with the Greyhounds scoring Boxley on a sacrifice fly from #Brooke Johnson, and UWP bringing in three scores on a pair of longballs, including another from Casey. The score stood 5-4 in favor of Wisconsin-Parkside with three innings in the book.
The Greyhounds tallied their final three runs in the top of the fourth, all with two outs.
Jamie Keltz got things started with a walk and a steal of second base, and she was followed with a walk by
Maggie Swanson. Russell cleared the bases with her second jack of the day to plate the three UIndy runs and put the Greyhounds back on top, 7-5.
Wisconsin-Parkside knotted the score at 7-7 with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth. Casey then completed her hat trick of homers with one of the walk-off variety to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift her squad to the 8-7 win.
Breeden had another pair of hits in game two, as did Martinez. Russell had three RBI, bringing her total to four on the day and eight on the weekend.
Amanda Wendlinger (4-2) took the loss for UIndy, going two-and-two-thirds innings and surrendering five of the Rangers' runs.
UIndy continues on in GLVC play this weekend, hosting Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine at Indiana Central Little League. Saturday's first pitch against the Norse is slated for 12:00.
