INDIANAPOLIS- UIndy fought through a chilly, rainy day at Indiana Central Little League Saturday to take a pair of GLVC softball contests from Northern Kentucky. The wins improve the Greyhounds' record to 15-11 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Norse fall to 12-13 on the year, 3-6 in GLVC games.
GAME 1
The Norse took an early 1-0 lead in the day's opening game with just one swing of Rose Broderick's bat, but the Greyhounds answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 2-1 lead.
Jamie Keltz started things off with a single to left, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Keltz was brought in by an RBI-double from
Megan Russell, who would later score on a triple to right by
Jenny Swanson.
UIndy padded its lead in bottom of the fourth inning, when
Carmen Martinez jacked the first homerun of her Greyhound career. Martinez's shot over the centerfield fence was the 30th homerun of the year for the UIndy team, and ran the score to 3-1 in favor of the home team.
NKU cut the Greyhound advantage to just one in the fifth, plating a pair of runs on two hits. UIndy added one more run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-2, with
Maggie Swanson, who reached on a double through the left side, coming around to score on an RBI-double from
Ashley Boxley.
The Greyhounds broke it open in the sixth, pushing five runs across on four hits.
Lindsey Gustine and Keltz came around first, on Keltz's seventh homerun of the season.
Maggie Swanson followed with a single and a steal of second, with Russell walking during the next UIndy at bat. A
Jenny Swanson single brought Maggie home, and a double from
Jessica Breeden a batter later plated both
Jenny Swanson and Russell to run the UIndy lead to 9-3.
Russell notched her seventh win of the year with the decision. The junior struck out seven while scattering eight hits in her seven innings of work. Keltz and
Jenny Swanson each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs in game one of the day.
GAME 2
With the wind and the rain picking up for the beginning of the nightcap, neither team scored until the third inning. UIndy put up three runs in the bottom of the third frame, with Keltz scoring Gustine on a double down the left field line for the first run. Keltz was brought in on a single from Russell, who later scored on an RBI single from Breeden.
The Greyhounds doubled their lead in the fifth inning, with Russell opening the frame with a single through the left side.
Renae Thomas came into run for Russell, and Boxley followed with a single to put runners on first and second. A fielding error by the pitcher loaded the bases for Martinez (pictured), who scored Thomas with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Boxley also came around to score on the play when the secondbaseman committed an error. Breeden would score the final UIndy run, on an RBI single from Gustine.
NKU scored its lone run in the top of the sixth, on another solo shot from Broderick. Russell led the Greyhound offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Keltz added a pair of hits and an RBI.
Amanda Wendlinger took the win in the circle for UIndy, striking out two in a seven-inning, two-hit performance. She improves her 2009 record to 4-3.
UIndy hosts Bellarmine in another GLVC doubleheader Sunday at Indiana Central Little League. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00.
