INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhounds swept a GLVC doubleheader with Drury Saturday at Indiana Central Little League, taking both games by identical 8-0 scores in five innings. UIndy improved its record to 21-13 on the season, 12-4 in the GLVC with the wins, while the visiting Lady Panthers fell to 12-30 on the year, 1-11 in conference play.
GAME 1
No runs crossed the plate until the third inning, when the Greyhounds plated one with
Lindsey Gustine scoring after leading off the inning with a single to right center. Gustine came around on a double to left center from
Megan Russell after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jamie Keltz.
UIndy's offense exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning.
Jessica Breeden started things off with a single to second, and then stole second.
Ashley Boxley and
Jenny Swanson both walked, loading the bases for
Carmen Martinez, who answered the challenge with a bases-clearing single/error combination. Martinez scored two batters later, when Keltz launched a ball over the left center fence.
Maggie Swanson walked next for UIndy, and was brought home on a two-run shot to right center by Russell to run the score to 8-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Russell took the win in the circle for UIndy, in addition to leading the home team at the plate. She recorded nine strikeouts in her five innings of work while surrendering just two hits and one walk to the Lady Panther lineup. Russell went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs in game one.
GAME 2
The Greyhounds came close to exactly copying their game one scoring effort, again not scoring until the third inning. UIndy plated three runs on four hits in the third, with Martinez leading the frame off with a single through the left side. Keltz singled two hitters later, and Martinez came home on a passed ball. Russell gave a repeat performance of her two-run homer to right-center from game one to plate Keltz and put the home team ahead 3-0.
UIndy again pushed the run rule into effect in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and a pair of Drury errors.
Jenny Swanson was the first Greyhound on base, getting hit by a pitch with one out. She stole second and advanced to third on a single from Martinez. Both Swanson and Martinez came home on a two-RBI single from Gustine. Keltz reached on a fielder's choice a batter later and scored when
Maggie Swanson reached on a throwing error by the Lady Panther thirdbaseman. Russell then tripled and scored on another error, while plating Swanson. When the dust cleared, the Greyhounds led 8-0.
Amanda Wendlinger sealed the second UIndy victory of the day with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fifth to earn her sixth win of the year. She fanned eight while walking one and allowing just one Drury hit in her five innings in the circle. Russell again highlighted the Greyhound offense with a pair of hits and three RBIs.
UIndy will host another GLVC doubleheader tomorrow, with Rockhurst coming to ICLL for a noon matchup with the Greyhounds.
NOTES: The Greyhounds honored their five seniors at the conclusion of game two, with Gustine, Wendlinger, Jenny Swanson, Maggie Swanson and Sara Agnew all being recognized.
