UIndy takes two from Hillsdale

UIndy 2, Hillsdale 0
UIndy 10, Hillsdale 0 (5 innings)

INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound softball team ran their winning streak to seven and their victory total for 2009 to an even 25 with a pair of regional wins against Hillsdale Thursday at Indiana Central Little League. UIndy bested the visiting Chargers 2-0 in game one before taking a 10-0 decision in five innings in the nightcap. The Greyhounds' record now stands at 25-13 with the out-of-conference wins, and the pair of shutouts on the day marked the fifth and sixth shutouts in a row for UIndy.

GAME 1
UIndy plated its first run in the first inning, with Maggie Swanson starting things out with a one-out single to the thirdbase side. She  advanced to third on a double to the left-center fence from Megan Russell, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Jenny Swanson. The Greyhounds left the bases loaded in the inning though, with Carmen Martinez ending the inning on a deep fly-out to centerfield.

Lindsey Gustine crossed the plate in the second inning for UIndy, after reaching on a one-out single up the middle. She was brought in on a single to left by Maggie Swanson after stealing second and getting to third on a passed ball.

The two Greyhound runs would stand for the win, with Russell tossing a one-hit shutout for her 12th win of the year. The junior was perfect through four innings, allowing the visitors' lone hit to the lead-off batter of the fifth inning. Just one more runner even reached base, on an error, for the Chargers. Russell finished the game with 11 strikeouts and no walks.

GAME 2
The Greyhounds got on the board with their first runs of game two in the bottom of the second inning. Cat Sampson came around to score after singling to right field, coming all the way around from first on a single-misplay in the outfield combination by Jenny Swanson. The second and third UIndy runs came in on a double down the left field line from Chrissy Stephens, plating Jenny Swanson and Martinez, who reached on an error by the Hillsdale shortstop. Gustine followed with an infield single to the left side, and Maggie Swanson (pictured) Russell brought both runners in on a double to right field for the fifth and sixth runs of the inning.

UIndy put the run-rule into effect with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jenny Swanson's single through the left side started things off, and she came home on a Martinez two-run homer over the right field fence. Gustine was the next to score, coming in on an off-the-wall double by Jamie Keltz. The Hillsdale thirdbaseman missed a flyball hit by Russell, plating Keltz for the final UIndy run.

Amanda Wendlinger got the win in game two, running her record to 8-4 on the season. The senior struck out six and walked two while surrendering two Charger hits.

The Greyhounds return to GLVC play Saturday, traveling up I-65 for a pair of contests with Saint Joseph's. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. UIndy is currently standing third in the circuit with a record of 14-4 with the conference tournament looming in two weeks. The Greyhounds have six conference games remaining on the docket, including the pair at SJC Saturday.
