URBANA, Ohio- The Greyhounds split a non-conference doubleheader at Urbana Thursday, winning game one in five innings, 10-0, before dropping a 12-inning, 2-1 decision in the nightcap. UIndy's record stands at 18-12 overall with the 1-1 day.
GAME 1
The Greyhounds flexed their muscle in game one of the day, with the offense putting up 10 runs in five innings to run-rule the Blue Knights. UIndy struck first in the second inning, plating a pair of runs on two hits.
Jenny Swanson and
Carmen Martinez were the first two Greyhounds across the plate, scoring on a two-RBI double from
Lindsey Gustine.
UIndy put up four more runs in the third inning, with three of the scores coming on a three-run homer to right field from
Jessica Breeden. The Breeden bomb scored
Jenny Swanson and
Megan Russell. Martinez came around for the fourth Greyhound run, scoring on a single by Gustine after reaching on a double to left field.
The fourth inning saw the Greyhounds put up three more runs on three more hits. Martinez hit in two of those runs, scoring
Jenny Swanson and
Ashley Boxley. Breeden (pictured) also crossed the plate in the fourth, coming home on a Gustine groundout to second base.
UIndy put the icing on the game with a lone run in the fifth inning.
Maggie Swanson led off the frame with a triple to right field, and was brought home on a double from
Cat Sampson a batter later for the run.
Martinez and Gustine each had a pair of hits in game one, with Gustine pitching in four RBIS in the contest. Breeden had three RBIs.
Russell earned the win for the Greyhounds, striking out six and walking none in three innings of work. The junior gave up no hits to the Blue Knights en route to earning her ninth win of the season.
GAME 2
Runs were much harder to come by in the second game of the double-dip, with UIndy and Urbana combining for just three runs over 12 innings in game two.
Neither team could score in the allotted seven innings of play, but both pushed across single runs in the eighth inning. The Greyhounds got Russell home after she led off the eighth with a single. Martinez was credited with the RBI, singling to left field to bring in the run.
Urbana scored its first run unearned in the bottom of the eighth inning. A one-out walk came back to haunt UIndy hurler
Amanda Wendlinger, as that batter came around to score the tying run of the ballgame. The Blue Knights plated the run on an error at second base by the Greyhounds, pushing the game into more extra frames.
The Blue Knights broke the tie in the bottom of the 12th inning, with another walked batter providing the run for the home team. With two outs, Wendlinger walked the Blue Knight batter, who was then advanced on a bunt single. A double in the next atbat brought in the run and gave Urbana the 2-1 win.
Wendlinger (4-4) was tagged with the loss in game two, going 11-and-two-thirds innings. The senior struck out 13 and walked five while scattering five hits in the effort. Breeden had three of the nine UIndy hits, while Russell and Gustine each had two hits apiece.
UIndy returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday, making the trip to Quincy for a doubleheader with the Lady Hawks. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. EST.
