Lewis 3, UIndy 2
EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The Lewis Flyers avenged their 2008 GLVC Softball Championships loss to UIndy with a 3-2 defeat of the Greyhounds at Eastside Centre Saturday evening. The loss drops UIndy out of the tournament, while the Flyers advance on to the championship game to face Northern Kentucky tomorrow.
UIndy scored its first batter of the game, with
Jamie Keltz sending her ninth home run over the left field fence to give the Greyhounds the early 1-0 lead. Lewis answered in the top of the second, pushing the tying run across on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. The Flyers plated two more on a double that fell just inside the leftfield line with one out to put themselves in the lead 3-1.
The Greyhounds cut the Lewis lead to one in the fifth, with
Carmen Martinez leading off the frame with a single up the middle, going to second on a
Lindsey Gustine bunt single, and taking third on a wild pitch. Martinez came in to score on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by Keltz to run the score to 3-2 in favor of the Flyers.
Megan Russell suffered the loss, dropping her record to 14-9 on the year. UIndy (31-18) will now have to wait and see how things shake out in the NCAA Regional rankings to determine it's plans for next week.
NOTES: UIndy got its leadoff batter on in five out of six first innings, but only scored the runner once . . . the Greyhounds were ranked No.5 in the Midwest Region coming into this weekend's tournament.
