UIndy 5, Quincy 2
EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The Greyhounds kept themselves alive in the 2009 GLVC Softball Championships with a come-from-behind win against Quincy Saturday at Eastside Centre. UIndy bested the Lady Hawks 5-2 to advance on to play the loser of the Lewis/Northern Kentucky game this evening at 5:00.
Quincy scored a pair in the bottom of the first inning, with the first two Lady Hawk batters reaching on singles through the left side. UIndy starter
Amanda Wendlinger struck out the third Quincy hitter, but then walked the bases loaded. An RBI-single through the right side plated the first Lady Hawk run and prompted Wendlinger to be lifted from the game.
Meagan Gutierrez came on in relief and got a flyball out before surrendering the second QU run on a single through the left side.
Jessica Breeden had the lone two hits for UIndy through four innings, a single through the left side in the second and a solo homer for the first Greyhound run in the fourth.
Carmen Martinez led off the fifth inning with a double to right field, and came home to tie the game 2-2 on a double down the leftfield line from
Jamie Keltz.
The Greyhounds broke the tie in the top of the seventh, with Martinez hammering a lead-off double to left field.
Lindsey Gustine followed with a homer over the leftfield fence to push UIndy into the lead, 4-2. Keltz got on via a walk, stole second and took third on throw into centerfield by the Quincy catcher.
Ashley Boxley took a two out walk and the combo of her and Keltz completed the double steal of second and home for the fifth Greyhound score.
Gutierrez (6-3) earned the win, tossing 6.2 innings of shutout ball. She struck out one and allowed just two hits in the effort. Breeden was perfect at the plate in the win, going three-for-three wiht a run scored and an RBI.
