UIndy knocks off top-seeded UMSL

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- UIndy and Megan Russell came out on top in a matchup of the GLVC's Player and Pitcher of the Year, with Russell earning the pitching win and hammering a grand slam in the contest. The Greyhounds took the 10-0 win in six innings over top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis to continue on in GLVC Softball Championship play, and will face Quincy at 2:00 this afternoon.

The Greyhounds broke up the pitchers' dual in the top of the fourth inning, plating two on a shot over the left field fence from Carmen MartinezJessica Breeden came to the plate on the Martinez homer, after singling to right center and being bunted over to second on a sacrifice from Cat Sampson.

UIndy continued to batter GLVC Pitcher of the Year Allyson DeFosset in the fifth inning, scoring another two runs. Jamie Keltz and Maggie Swanson both took walks from DeFosset to opening the inning, and Ashley Boxley took a walk a batter later with one out to load the bases for Breeden. She responded with a single through the right side, scoring Keltz and Swanson to put the Greyhounds ahead 4-0.

DeFosset bowed out of the contest prior to the UIndy sixth, and the Greyhounds continued their offensive barrage. UIndy led off the frame with a Martinez walk, and Lindsey Gustine laid down a bunt single to put runners and first and second with no outs. Keltz moved the runners over with a groundout to third, and Maggie Swanson walked to juice the bases for Russell. The conference Player of the Year answered with a grandslam shot over the right center fence to push the UIndy lead to 8-0.

Boxley followed with a single through the left side, and Renae Thomas came in to run for her. Jenny Swanson then placed a basehit down the rightfield line to put two on and still only one out. Sara Agnew was called on to pinch hit, and answered with a double to centerfield, scoring Thomas and Jenny Swanson for UIndy runs nine and ten.

In addition to her grandslam feat, Russell struck out six in her five-hit shutout in the circle. The win runs her 2009 record to 14-8, while the Greyhounds improve to 30-17 overall.
