ASHLAND, Ohio- Senior
Jenny Swanson smacked a three-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon, propelling UIndy to a 3-0 win over Missouri-St. Louis and into the NCAA Midwest Regional championship game. Junior
Megan Russell got the win, posting her second straight shutout at the tournament pushing her team into Sunday's championship game.
The game was a pitcher's duel throughout, featuring the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Allyson DeFosset of UMSL and the league's Player of the Year in Russell of the Greyhounds. Both hurlers worked their way out of jams, keeping the scoreboard blank through six innings.
UIndy (33-18) got things going in the top of the seventh when a one-out comebacker by
Maggie Swanson knocked down DeFosset and helped her aboard with one down. Russell served a single in the next at bat and UIndy had two on with one down. After
Ashley Boxley popped out to short, the inning was left in
Jenny Swanson's hands. She delivered when she stroked a rope over the right-centerfield wall for a 3-0 advantage in the final inning.
Russell made it stand up, working past a leadoff walk by striking out the final two batters and the Greyhounds moved to the regional championship for the first time in school history. She has thrown all 14 innings at the NCAA regional, without allowing a run and striking-out 14 total. She also had a pair of hits, part of UIndy's six on the game.
The Greyhounds advance to the championship series of the four-team regional, playing the lone team left standing after the loser's bracket games later today. UIndy will play the winner of Wayne State/Ashland vs. UMSL in Sunday's 1:00 p.m. championship game. Catch the action live on WICR 88.7 FM or online at wicr.uindy.edu.
