FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The UIndy track and field squads opened the 2011-12 season Saturday, with a select group of student-athletes traveling to the Mastadon Opener hosted by IPFW.

The Greyhounds had the top four finishers in the men's weight throw, with Royer taking the event's title with a throw of 19.41 meters. Ryan Smith took second with a toss of 18.50 meters, while Marcus Montgomery was third with a mark of 17.38 meters. Nikko Peebles took fourth with a throw of 16.55 meters. Both Royer and Smith's marks were good for NCAA provisional cuts.

UIndy also dominated the men's shot put, with Smith topping the field with a throw of 16.86 meters. Royer took second with a mark of 15.77 meters, while Peebles was third with a 14.27. Smith's shotput mark was also good for an NCAA provisional mark.

In addition to the provisional cuts by the throwers, Joshua Bass also acheived a NCAA provisional cut in the long jump, with a leap of 7.21 meters. The jump was good for second in the event.

Next up for the Greyhounds is a trip to the Illinois Wesleyan Track and Field Invitational next weekend.
