FLORENCE, Ala.- The No. 9 UIndy softball team moved to 8-0 on the season with a pair of wins over North Alabama Saturday. The Greyhounds took game one 9-3 before taking a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
UINDY 9, NORTH ALABAMA 3
The Greyhounds found themselves trailing for just the second time this season, as the Lions put up a single run in the second inning, followed by two more in the third. UIndy answered in its half of the third, plating five runs on two hits and two UNA errors.
DeVyn Barker started things off by taking first base after being hit by a pitch.
Jennifer DeMotte followed with a walk, and a single to left field from
Dakota Malayer scored Barker, with DeMotte coming home on a fielding error by the Lion leftfielder.
A
Jessica Breeden single to left center put Malayer on third, and
Shelby Owens walked a batter later to load the bases. After a fielder's choice, the bases still stood loaded for for
Kelsey Rummel. The Greyhound sophomore put the ball in right field, where an error by the UNA fielder cleared the bases and put UIndy up 5-3.
UIndy scored one more in the fifth, with Barker again sparking the tally. The freshman Greyhound singled to the pitcher, was sacrificed over by DeMotte and scored on a single to right field by Malayer.
Jamie Keltz got in on the action in the top of the seventh, leading the inning off by being hit by a pitch. She then stole second, moved to third on a Barker single, and scored on a throwing error by the Lion catcher on a steal by Barker.
DeMotte reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Barker to third. A single from Malayer scored Barker to put UIndy ahead, 8-3. DeMotte came around to score on a passed ball to close out the UIndy scoring.
DeMotte earned the win, her sixth of the season. The reigning NFCA National DII Pitcher of the Week struck out six and walked just one in seven innings of work.
UINDY 7, NORTH ALABAMA 1
In game two, The Greyhounds were again behind early, as the Lions pushed one run across in the bottom of the first. UIndy answered with a single run in the second to tie the game 1-1.
The inning started with a single to left field, and followed with a steal of second. Breeden then made her way to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout by Rummel.
UIndy took the lead with another run in the fourth. Breeden led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the UNA thirdbaseman. She stole second, and scored on a single to right center by
Krysta Bradford to put th Greyhounds up 2-1.
The Greyhounds doubled their offensive output with two more runs in the fifth inning. A Keltz walk started things off, with the UIndy senior moving to second on a single to right field by DeMotte. An error by the Lion shortstop loaded the bases, and Keltz came around to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Breeden.
Audrey Ernst came through with a pinch-hit RBI single through the right side to score Malayer for the inning's second run.
UIndy blew the game open in the sixth with four more runs. Bradford doubled to left, Keltz and Barker both walked two batters later, and Bradford scored on an RBI groundout to shortstop by DeMotte.
A single from Malayer a batter later scored both Barker and Keltz, and a pair of wild pitches sent Malayer to third. She scored on a Breeden single to centerfield, closing out the score at 8-1.
Meagan Gutierrez took the win in the circle in game two, going four innings. Gutierrez struck out three en route to her first win of the season.
On the day, Malayer was 4-for-8 at the plate with five RBIs.
No. 9 UIndy continues on in the state of Alabama, heading to Huntsville for a showdown with No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville tomorrow at noon.
