SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- UIndy softball opened its GLVC season with a doubleheader split at Illinois-Springfield Friday, dropping game one 3-2 to the host Prairie Stars before coming back for a 10-4 win in 10 innings in game two of the day. With the split, No. 7 UIndy is now 9-2-1 on the season, 1-1 in GLVC contests.
Illinois-Springfield 3 - UIndy 2
The Greyhounds struck first in game one, plating two runs in the third inning. UIndy started things off with a
Jamie Keltz walk, and a steal of second. A double two batters later from
Jennifer DeMotte scored Keltz.
Dakota Malayer followed with a single up the middle to score DeMotte and put UIndy up 2-0.
The Prairie Stars answered quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. A home run down the left field line by Tina Buck started the inning, and the second UIS run came across on a throwing error by the Greyhound catcher, after reaching on a single to the thirdbase side.
The longball would prove to be the death of UIndy, as a homerun to left center by Brooke Carroll would give the Prairie Stars the eventual 3-2 victory.
DeMotte (6-2) took the loss in the circle for UIndy. The Greyhound sophomore struck out eight and surrendered four hits in the loss.
UIndy 10 - Illinois-Springfield 4 (10 inn.)
The Prairie Stars got on the scoreboard early in game two of the day, posting two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Illinois-Springfield added to its lead with a single run in the bottom of the third, with Jaylyn Jones sending a homerun down the leftfield line.
UIndy came alive in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits. The inning started with DeMotte taking a base after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to third on a double by Malayer, and scored on a single to left center by
Audrey Ernst.
A walk to
Jessica Breeden brought in Malayer, and a double to right two batters later by
Kelsey Rummel plated two more and gave the Greyhounds the 4-3 lead.
UIS pushed across a single run in the bottom of the sixth on three hits and a UIndy error to tie the score at 4-4 heading into the seventh.
The Greyhounds opened it up in the 10th inning, plating six runs on five hits and one Prairie Star error. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer to just left of centerfield by Rummel, who ended the contest with five RBIs. Breeden, who had a two-RBI single in the 10th, finished the game with three runs batted in.
Lauren Edwards earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings of the 10-inning marathon. Edwards struck out eight and gave up none of the UIS runs in game two en route to the victory.
The Greyhounds have a quick turnaround, heading to Quincy for another GLVC doubleheader Saturday. First pitch against the Lady Hawks is slated for 12:00 CST. Follow livestats of the action
