Softball splits on first day of GLVC Tournament action

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- No. 14 UIndy opened GLVC Tournament play with a thrilling 1-0 win over Quincy, but fell in its second game of the day, 9-1 at the hands of top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis. The Greyhounds (34-11-1) now must come out of the bottom of the bracked and win five games over the next two days to become the 2011 GLVC Tournament Champion.

NO. 14 UINDY 1 - QUINCY 0 (8 INNINGS)
The four-seeded Greyhounds and No. 5-seeded Quincy opened the 2011 GLVC Softball Championships with a good old-fashioned pitcher's dual. Neither team scored through the regulation seven innings, with UIndy finally taking the win on a walk-off basehit that just fell into left field off the bat of Jamie Keltz in the bottom of the eighth.

Quincy pitcher Torie Bunzell, the two-time GLVC Pitcher of the Year, did not allow a Greyhound on base until the seventh inning, when Keltz led off with a walk. Bunzell retired the next three UIndy hitters, however, to strand Keltz on first.

Jessica Breeden drew a one-out walk as the second batter of the Greyhound eighth, and stole second during the next atbat. Krysta Bradford also walked, to put runners on first and second with two outs. Kelsey Rummel reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Keltz, who answered with the left field single to end the ballgame.

UIndy pitcher Jennifer DeMotte (20-4) earned the shutout win, her seventh of the year. DeMotte allowed just four Hawk baserunners in the contest, surrendering two hits and two walks over her eight innings of work. Bunzell (24-10) struck out 19 and gave up just one hit.

MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS 9 - NO. 14 UINDY 1 (6 INNINGS)
Game two did not start the way UIndy would have wanted, with the Greyhounds surrendering four runs to the Tritons in the top of the first inning. UMSL combined a lead-off single, a Greyhound error and back-to-back homeruns from Karey Kruse and Heather Arras to take the early 4-0 lead.

UMSL added two more on a second Kruse homer in the second.

UIndy was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second, with Breeden coming around to score after reaching on a one-out basehit to left.

After playing through three innings with no scoring, the Tritons pushed their lead to eight runs with three in the top of the sixth. A bases-loaded walk to Kruse plated the first run of the inning, with a two-run double off the bat of Arras scoring the second and third runs of the frame. The Greyhounds could not answer back in the bottom of the sixth, and fell to the eight-run rule.

DeMotte started the game in the circle and took the loss, falling to 20-5. Lauren Edwards came on in relief of DeMotte after one-third of an inning. Breeden had two of the three UIndy hits against the Tritons (31-18).

The Greyhounds fall to the bottom of the bracket and will face off with No. 8-seeded Rockhurst at noon EST Saturday.
