CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.- Both the UIndy men's and women's cross country squads opened their 2011 season at the 49th annual Wabash Hokum Karem.

The Greyhound men took second of six teams, behind the host Little Giants. UIndy's women also took second, of five teams, finishing behind DePauw.

The race features two runners combining for a total of six miles in the men's race and four miles in the women's race. Each runner completes one mile, then hands the baton to their teammate, alternating miles to the completion of the race. The top-three pairs for each school earn points in the overall team scoring based upon their finishing place, with the lowest score claiming the team competition.

Alex Cushman and Sean O'Brien led the UIndy men, with the pair coming in sixth with a time of 30:10. The Greyhounds had the seventh and eighth-place finishers in the race as well, with the duo of Jacob Fisher and Ben McMillan coming in seventh (30:12) and Josh Gornall and Andrew Piropato (30:13) following in eighth.

For the UIndy women, Stephanie Cave and Haley Wittig came in second with a time of 23:37. Courtney Raypole and Hannah Rucker took seventh with a time of 24:10, and Sutton Knapp and Michelle Lewis took ninth with a time of 24:36.

The Greyhounds head to the Madison Kiwanis Invitational next Saturday at Hanover College.
