INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy football team got one step closer to a playoff berth Saturday night with a gutsy 33-18 win against visiting Delta State Saturday night.  The Greyhounds, who haven't lost in two months, upped their record to 8-2 on the year, good for their first eight-win season since 1998.

Ranked fourth in the region, UIndy limited an athletic Statesmen squad to just 249 total yards – nearly 150 yards below their average.  The Greyhounds led 16-0 at halftime and later converted a big 4th & 1 play to set up what proved to be a game-clinching score midway through the fourth quarter.

Down just eight points early in the aforementioned fourth, the Statesmen (3-6) seized the momentum after recovering a rare Greyhound fumble inside UIndy territory.

DSU completed an eight-yard pass on first down, but one play later, gave the ball right back to the Hounds when UIndy cornerback Nick Wehby delivered a ball-jarring hit on a Statesman receiver.  Wehby recovered the fumble as well, inviting the Greyhound offense back on the field.

UIndy drove 35 yards to the Delta State 38-yard line where it faced a crucial 4th & 1 situation.  The offense remained on the field and delivered its biggest play of the night when quarterback Chris Mills faked a hand-off and found tight end Adam Knies down the seam for a 37-yard gain.

Though the Statesmen caught him at the one-yard line, Knies' catch set up a Klay Fiechter touchdown to put the Hounds up 26-11 with just eight minutes to play.

Fiechter later tacked on an insurance score with a 61-yard scamper, but Delta State would not threaten again.  The lengthy run not only netted Fiechter his third touchdown of the night, but also gave the Bluffton, Ind., native the program's single-season rushing record.

With 294 yards through the air on the night, the Greyhounds' passing game accounted for most of the team's offensive production.   Mills finished 28-of-37, with 14 of his completions going to Mar'quone Edmonds, marking the second time this year that Edmonds tied the school's single-game receptions mark.  In addition, Edmonds became the first-ever Greyhound with over 3,000 career receiving yards, as his total of 169 yards Saturday pushed his career sum to 3,091.

Defensively, senior linebacker Max Davis led the way with nine total tackles.  He heads into his final regular-season game just nine tackles short of 400 for his career.

Along with Wehby's big play in the fourth, the “D” earned another takeaway in the second quarter when Mike Phillips got a paw on a Spencer Van Brunt pass, helping fellow defensive end Vince Maida garner his first career interception.

With 10 games in the books, UIndy hits the road for the regular-season finale next weekend.  The Greyhounds return to conference play to face Urbana Saturday, Nov. 10.  Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.  A win against the Blue Knights would  earn the Greyhounds an outright GLVC championship.
