INDIANAPOLIS – Former UIndy baseball player Andrew Werner made his Major League debut for San Diego Wednesday, delivering a quality start and earning the win in the Padres' 4-2 victory against Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old lefty allowed just two runs in six-plus innings to help San Diego complete a series sweep of the Pirates.
Werner surrended just four hits while striking out two and walking four. His first career strikeout victim? None other than the major league's leading hitter, Andrew McCutchen. Werner got the MVP candidate swinging on a 1-2 offering to end a 1-2-3 first.

With help from a double play in the second, Werner cruised through the first six frames, allowing just one run while inducing 10 ground-ball outs. He came out for the seventh and gave up a leadoff homer to 2011 all-star Gaby Sanchez, then walked the next hitter before being pulled.
The rookie threw 47 of his 82 pitches for strikes, relying on an effective splittter/change-up combination. Werner's performance made him the first former Greyhound the earn a Major-League win as a pitcher.
In his final season at UIndy, Werner led the '09 Greyhound pitching staff in strikeouts, helping set a new team record of 516 total Ks on the season. The Washington, Ill., native fanned 99 batters in 88 2/3 innings while compiling a 3.15 ERA and a 7-2 record. As a team, the Hounds went 43-21 that season, losing in the finals of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
