QUINCY, Ill. – History was made Saturday night in Quincy, Ill., as the UIndy Greyhounds played their first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference football game, besting Quincy Univeristy, 35-7. Junior
Klay Fiechter found the end zone three times, while the Greyhound defense kept the home Hawks (0-3, 0-1) off the board until the final 90 seconds.
In the last of four conference games Saturday, the Greyhounds produced nearly 400 total yards of offense. All five of UIndy's touchdowns came from at least 15 yards out, with three coming from at least 50 yards.
Coming off of two straight 100-yard rushing games to start the season, Fiechter produced a whopping 268 all-purpose yards, including 92 yards on the ground.
The Bluffton, Ind., native got the Hounds on the board early with a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. It marked the third punt-return TD for UIndy in the last four years and the longest since 1998.
The Greyhounds went up 14-0 when Fiechter scored a second TD with a 15-yard run just before the end of the first quarter. The play was set up by two big pass plays, including a 45-yard completion by
Greg Johnson.
After the Greyhound defense forced a fifth straight Quincy punt, quarterback
Chris Mills and the Hounds looked to put up another seven points, but an apparent touchdown pass to
Mar'quone Edmonds was called back on a holding call.
The penalty was coupled with a sack to stall the methodical drive and force a punt. Nevertheless, the possession chewed up nearly six minutes and ended with an
Aaron Puntarelli boot that pinned the Hawks at their own six-yard line.
The UIndy D continued to stifle the Hawks' attack for the remainder of the first half, limiting the home team to zero points and just six first downs. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds outgained their opponents in total yards, 252-89, in the first 30 minutes.
After the break, the Hawks finally managed their first sustained drive on their second possession of the second half. They crossed midfield for the first time and reached the red zone, but the UIndy special teams came up big when
Josh Bass blocked the QU field goal attempt to keep the shutout intact.
The UIndy offense answered with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Edmonds. The lengthy strike came three plays after a 64-yard rush by Fiechter that was nullified by a penalty.
The Hounds capped their scoring with a 56-yard fumble recovery from sophomore
Koby Orris, good for the team's first defensive score of the season.
Staying on the defensive side, junior
Todd Hacker recorded his second straight double-digit tackle game. The Mooresville, Ind., product led all players with 14 stops, while fellow UIndy linebacker
Max Davis finished with 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
After spending the first three weeks on the road, the Greyhounds finally play on their home turf this Saturday, as UIndy hosts McKendree in a 6 p.m. game at Key Stadium Sept. 22.
Notes: Edmonds' career TD reception total now sits at 26, tying the school's all-time mark; he has recorded a 50-plus-yard catch in each of the last two games… Orris' score was his second collegiate TD return, as he had a 45-yard INT return last season...QB Mills finished 14-for-26 for 233 yards with one TD and zero interceptions…UIndy had three potential touchdowns called back on holding penalties.
