PITTSBURG, Kan. – Senior linebacker
Max Davis, senior wide receiver
Mar'quone Edmonds and junior running back
Klay Fiechter were all named to the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team, announced by the Don Hansen Football Committee Monday. Davis and Edmonds both picked up third-team honors, while Fiechter earned honorable mention.
The announcement marks the third national award for Edmonds, second for Davis and first for Fiechter. Edmonds was named to the All-America First Team by Beyond Sports Network, while also receiving All-America Honorable Mention from D2Football.com. Davis picked up third-team recognition from Beyond Sports Network.
A total of 175 student-athletes earned some form of Don Hansen All-America honors, including players from 83 of the 157 football-playing schools in Division II. National champion Valdosta State and national semifinalist West Texas A&M led the way by placing eight players apiece on the All-America squad. Besides the three Greyhounds, only one other Great Lakes Valley Conference player made the cut, as Central State's Darius Wilson grabbed second-team honors at linebacker.
The Division II All-America Team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published
Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
After leading the team with 128 total tackles last fall, Davis finished his collegiate career ranked fifth on the school's all-time tackles list. The Cathedral High School grad and UIndy team captain finished his time on campus as just the sixth-ever Greyhound with three consecutive 100-tackle seasons.
Edmonds, meanwhile, will go down as arguably the greatest receiver in UIndy history, as the Waukegan, Ill., native set single-season and career school records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Fiechter started all 13 games at running back and also filled the role of primary punt and kick returner for the Hounds. A product of Bluffton, Ind., Fiecther set multiple single-season school records, including ones for rushing yards (1475), rushing TDs (19), total TDs (21), points scored (126), all-purpose yards (2237) and punt return average (21.3).
Previous Greyhounds to make the Don Hansen All-America Team include Ted Liette (2nd team, 1998), Craig Cothron (honorable mention, 1998), Josh Gentry (1st, 1999), Ryan Forney (h.m., 2011) and
Chris Mills 2011, (h.m., 2011).
