LIBERTY, Mo. – The 21st-ranked UIndy football team (6-1, 3-0 GLVC) continued its dominance over Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents, handing William Jewell a
56-3 defeat on its home field. The Greyhounds hung a season-high 56 points on the scoreboard while holding their hosts to less than 200 yards of total offense. Only UIndy and Truman State remain unbeaten in conference play.
Â
Redshirt-sophomore quarterback
Connor Barthel was nearly perfect on the day, as his .950 completion percentage snapped the school's single-game record. He finished the game 19-for-20 for 284 yards and four touchdowns, and his only incompletion came on a drop in the third quarter.
Â
The Cathedral High School grad found his former prep teammate
Reece Horn for three of his four TD throws, including a 61-yard bomb late in the first half.
Â
For the second consecutive week, the Greyhounds scored on their second play from scrimmage. The UIndy "D" forced a three-and-out to start the game before junior
Greg Johnson took a screen pass 58 yards to the house to give the Hounds the early lead.
Â
The rout was on from there, as Barthel dissected the Cardinal defense with a perfect 17-for-17 performance in the first half. He mixed in a number of short, high-percentage passes with a few long balls to help build a 35-3 advantage at the break.
Â
Also in the first half, junior kicker
Scott Miller passed former Greyhound-standout Nick Parker (2002-05) to become the school's all-time leader in extra points. Â He finished the game with eight points, connecting on all eight of his PAT attempts.
Earlier in the third quarter, senior
Klay Fiechter returned a Cardinal punt 49 yards for a TD, good for his second career punt return for a touchdown.
Â
Defensively, the Hounds allowed less than 10 points for the fourth time this season. UIndy has surrendered a total of 13 points in its three GLVC contests the date, good for a miniscule 4.3 points-per-game average.
The Hounds play three of their final four regular-season games at Key Stadium, starting with a home game versus Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
Notes: UIndy has won all 11 of its conference games since the GLVC started football in 2012 … the Hounds' 56 points were their highest since matching that total versus Saint Joseph's on Oct. 6, 2012 … redshirt-freshman Jacob Moran notched his first career TD, while classmate Jamie Placht garnered his first career interception ... WJC's starting quarterback, DJ Balazs, is the brother of former UIndy softball graduate assistant Ashley Balazs.
