Recap from Fox 59
INDIANAPOLIS – The 20th-ranked UIndy football team (7-1, 4-0 GLVC) used all all-round performance to deliver a
52-0 shutout against visiting Kentucky Wesleyan (0-8, 0-4) at Key Stadium Saturday night . The Greyhounds upped their win streak to five and remained undefeated in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Â
UIndy wasted little time getting in the scoring column, hanging seven points on the board before the offense even set foot on the field. On the game's third play from scrimmage, KWC quarterback Will Barnes found his No. 1 target Jeff Ward in the flat, but Ward lost the handle and fumbled the ball. The miscue allowed junior linebacker
Eddie Antonietti to make a 21-yard scoop-and-score for his first collegiate TD.
Â
Following a
Scott Miller field goal on the next drive, the UIndy offense and specials teams combined to score a touchdown on the next five possessions to build a gaudy 45-0 halftime advantage. Meanwhile, the Panthers mustered just 49 yards of total offense in the first half, including a mere six rushing yards.
Â
Also in the first half, senior
Klay Fiechter broke yet another school record – a seemingly weekly event for the veteran running back/return man. Late in the first quarter, the Bluffton, Ind., native garnered his second carry of the night to up his career all-purpose yardage total past 5,200 yards, surpassing the 37-year-old mark held by former Greyhound standout and Indiana Football Hall of Famer Dick Nalley (1973-76).
Â
Fiechter finished with three touchdowns, including a 54-yard punt return for a score. His backfield tag-team partner,
Matt Ripp, amassed 90 rushing yards and two TDs. In all, UIndy rushed for 325 yards while out-gaining the Panthers by a staggering margin of 400 total yards.
Â
Immediately out of the break, UIndy struck again with a six-play, 71-yard scoring drive that took all of three minutes to orchestrate. Ripp's 11-yard scoring scamper punctuated both the possession itself and the game's scoring as a whole.
Â
UIndy called off the dogs from that point, pulling its starters and switching to a conservative, rush-heavy game plan.
Â
Amidst all the scoring done by the Hounds was a stellar effort by the UIndy defense. KWC was limited to a mere 73 total yards, good for the lowest total by a Greyhound opponent in six years. In addition, Kentucky Weslyan was forced to punt 10 times compared to just two punts by the Hounds.
Â
Freshman linebacker
Rob Dury led UIndy with six tackles, and senior
Mike Phillips chipped in a pair of sacks.
Â
The Hounds travel up I-65 Saturday, Nov. 2 for their final road game of the 2013 regular season – a match-up versus in-state Saint Joseph's. The Pumas (6-2, 3-1), who handed McKendree a 31-13 loss today, are just one game back of UIndy in the conference standings.
Â
Â
Notes: UIndy's first punt didn't come until midway through the fourth quarter; that punt by Pavel Polochanin went 68 yards, good for the longest punt by a Greyhound since Tyran Fakes set the school record with a 79-yard boot on Sept. 2, 2010 -- also versus KWC … In the month of October, the Hounds have outscored their four opponents by a combined total of 187-13 ... Fiechter stands just one TD shy of the school's all-time touchdown mark of 43, held by Dick Nyers (1952-55).
