INDIANAPOLIS – Though not an official member of the more than 3,000 fans in attendance, history showed up at Key Stadium Saturday night during the UIndy football team's
33-7 win versus Quincy. The Greyhounds (9-1, 6-0 GLVC) secured at least a share of its second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference title, while senior
Klay Fiechter became the school's all-time leading rusher.
Â
Entering the night just four yards shy of the mark, Fiechter needed just one carry to overtake Indiana Football Hall of Famer Dick Nalley (1973-76). Fiechter finished the evening with 123 yards on the ground, upping his career total to an impressive 3,679 yards.
Â
In addition, the Bluffton, Ind., native surpassed another major school record on the very same drive, one even older than the rushing mark. His first-quarter touchdown broke a tie with Dick Nyers (1952-55) for tops on the school's career TD list.
Â
The two aforementioned benchmarks had been in place a combined 95 years until tonight.
Quincy did its best to ignore the Hounds' history making, however, as sophomore QB Nick Lonergan capped the Hawk's game-opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run, giving the visitors an early lead.  The TD represented the only points QU could muster the entire half.
Â
Following Fiechter's 44-yard TD run that knotted it at 7-7, UIndy took the lead late in the first quarter with its first safety of the year. After a
Scott Miller punt pinned the Hawks at their own one-yard line, senior linebacker
Todd Hacker led a host of Hounds to tackle QU running back Jared King in the end zone. The result was a 9-7 Greyhound advantage that stuck through halftime.
Â
The Greyhounds found new life out of the break. After receiving the third-quarter kickoff, the home squad marched 51 yards for their second TD of the night, punctuated by a two-yard plunge from Fiechter.
Â
Three minutes later, redshirt-sophomore QB
Connor Barthel found freshman
Kevin Teglia with a 15-yard scoring strike to build a 23-7 cushion.
Â
But the knockout combination came midway through the fourth quarter, starting with a big defensive stand. With the Hawks looking to generate some late momentum, the Hounds denied Quincy on a 4th & 8 deep in UIndy territory, handing the ball back to the Indianapolis offense.
Â
On the very next play, junior
Matt Ripp parlayed good down-field blocking with his is own ability to break tackles into an 89-yard rushing TD – the longest Greyhound play from scrimmage in 17 years. The marathon rush came one yard shy of matching the longest in program history, set by Gary Isza (1996) and, guess who… Dick Nyers (1954).
Â
Hacker led the Greyhounds defense with 10 tackles, three of which went for a loss. The Mooresville, Ind., product added a 32-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.
Â
The Greyhounds look to win the conference outright when it hosts Truman State Saturday, Nov. 16. Kickoff from Key Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Â
Â
Notes: Fiechter now has 45 career touchdowns; he also went over 1,000 rushing yards on the night, becoming the third-ever Greyhounds to turn the trick in back-to-back seasons … UIndy is 14-0 in GLVC games since the conference started football in 2012.
