FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 7 Greyhound softball team (8-2) split a pair of games on the second day of the North Alabama Invitational Saturday. UIndy took a 4-2 loss to Shorter University in the opener, then pummeled the host Lions, 8-0, in five innings.
GAME ONE
The Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk by
Samantha Krcelich in the bottom of the first, but the Hawks (7-1) put up four runs in the next three frames. Shorter plated all four runs without the benefit of an extra-base hit.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley allowed seven hits – all singles – to move to 4-2 on the year. She also struck out nine, while only three of her runs were earned.
Offensively, freshman
Erika Goodwin went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot and
Taylor Russell amassed two doubles and a single.
GAME TWO
UIndy exploded for five runs in the first.
Alexa Alfaro and
Bailey Wittenauer hit back-to-back homers, with Alfaro's good for the Hounds' first grand slam of the year. Wittenauer remained hot the rest of the game, stroking a double in the third before crushing another solo shot in the fifth.
Meanwhile, DeMotte tossed a shutout from the circle while allowing just one hit and striking out seven. North Alabama (11-3) mustered just two base runners in five at bats – one via a single and the other on an error.
The UNA Invite concludes tomorrow when the Hounds take on 24th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville at 11 a.m. Eastern and Georgia College & State at 1 p.m.
