FLORENCE, Ala. – The seventh-ranked UIndy softball team (10-2) finished its time at The North Alabama Invitational with a pair of wins Sunday, besting No. 24 Alabama-Huntsville, 9-6, in extra innings before shutting out Georgia College & State, 5-0.
GAME ONE
It took nine innings, but the Hounds made it 2-for-2 versus ranked teams this season by downing the 24th-ranked Lady Chargers in Sunday's opener. With the contest tied at five after regulation, the top-25 opponents traded single runs in the eighth, but the Greyhounds delivered the coup de grâce with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Bailey Wittenauer made the loudest noise in the frame with an RBI double.
Starting pitcher
Jennifer DeMotte retired the Chargers in order in the bottom of the ninth to notch the complete-game win.
The UIndy bats blasted three home runs in the win, with two coming from DeMotte. The Franklin Central grad added three runs scored and four RBIs.
Talyor Russell accounted for the other dinger with a solo shot in the fifth, while freshman
Jenny Thompson added a pair of singles after getting the start at catcher.
GAME TWO
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley tossed her first shutout as a collegian, fanning 14 Bobcats and walking just one in seven innings.
Offensively, Wittenauer followed
Alexa Alfaro's second-inning double with a two-run tater to give the Hounds an early lead. UIndy tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from
Krysta Bradford, who would later scored on a passed ball.
The action at the UNA Invite continues tomorrow, as the Greyhounds take on Shorter University at 4 p.m. Eastern and the host Lions at 6 p.m. Live stats will not be available.
