SPRIMGFIELD, Mo. – The third-ranked UIndy softball team upped its winning streak to 13, shutting out host Drury in a doubleheader sweep Saturday. The Greyhounds (20-2, 2-0 GLVC) held the host Lady Panthers scoreless for 14 consecutive innings after receiving back-to-back shutouts from pitchers
Jennifer DeMotte and
Morgan Foley.
Drury (10-8, 1-3), who topped the GLVC West Division in the league's preseason poll, managed nine hits in the two games combined, but just one Panther base runner got as far as third base all day.
GAME ONE
Though she surrendered six hits and two walks, DeMotte did her best work with runners on base. Drury put a runner in scoring position with one out on three occasions, but each time the Greyhound ace shut the door on the Panthers' scoring chances.
DeMotte finished strong with two Ks in each of the last two innings to move to 10-0 on the season.
After three scoreless frames, UIndy got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth. A single, an error and a walk loaded the bases before consecutive sac flies from DeMotte and
Alexa Alfaro plated the first runs of the game.
The Hounds scored two more in each of the final two innings, highlighted by a two-run double from
Taylor Russell in the seventh.
GAME TWO
Foley, the reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week, tossed a three-hitter in the capper, striking out 10 and walking zero. The freshman fireballer is now 10-2 in the circle this season.
UIndy's offensive fireworks in the fourth inning proved more than enough for the win, as
Casey Williamson led off with a double and was driven home on Alfaro's second home run of the season.
The Greyhounds tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Williamson scored on a base knock from
Bailey Wittenauer.
UIndy makes the short trip to Rolla, Mo., Sunday to face the Missouri S&T Lady Miners. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern. With no press box at S&T Softball Field, live stats will only be available if weather permits.
