INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The win streak continued for the UIndy softball team (28-2, 10-0 GLVC) Saturday, as the second-ranked Greyhounds swept division-rival Lewis by scores of 7-2 and 10-1 at Baumgartner Field. The Flyers (8-8, 5-3) managed to keep the powerful UIndy offense in check most of the day, but a five-run sixth inning in the opening contest and a nine-run fourth in game two proved too much for the visitors to overcome.
GAME ONE
Game one remained very much in doubt until the Hounds' breakout sixth inning. UIndy built a lead with a solo homer from
Casey Williamson and an RBI single from
Samantha Krcelich, but the Flyers eventually tied it with two runs in the fifth.
UIndy put it away, however, by sending 10 batters to the plate in the decisive sixth. Five Hounds picked up base hits in the frame, including two-run singles from
Kelsey Rummel and
Bailey Wittenauer.
In the circle, starter
Jennifer DeMotte allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Her seven Ks bumped her career strikeout total to 665, good for the all-time record at UIndy.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley finished the game by retiring all seven Flyers she faced to earn the win in relief.
GAME TWO
After getting the start in game two, Foley (15-2) continued to mow down the Flyers. She allowed just two hits and fanned nine in the complete-game win, as a solo homer from Michelle Vucsko accounted for Lewis' lone run.
Sophomore
Taylor Russell gave the Hounds an early edge with her second solo home run in as many days, but after Vucsko tied it at one apiece, UIndy exploded for nine runs in the fourth. The home team supplemented a two-run double from DeMotte with a whopping six walks in the frame to put the game away in the minimum five innings.
UIndy plays its next six games on the road, starting with a mid-week doubleheader at Saint Joseph's Tuesday, Apr. 2.
Notes: Lewis' first run in the fifth inning of game one ended a string of 32 scoreless innings by UIndy opponents … Saturday's adversaries have accounted for the last three GLVC championships, with the Hounds winning last season and Lewis winning in 2010 and '11… DeMotte broke the career strikeout record of former Greyhound teammate Megan Russell (2007-10), who finished with 662 Ks. The two currently sport nearly identical strikeout-per-game totals, with DeMotte at 6.84 Ks per 7 IP and Russell at 6.82.
