INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy softball team (44-2, 24-0 GLVC) upped its school-record win streak to 37 Sunday by sweeping visiting McKendree (9-26, 7-20) by scores of 4-0 and 5-1. The No. 1-ranked Greyhounds honored their four seniors before the game, including
Bailey Wittenauer, who clubbed two home runs on the day.
Along with Wittenauer, the Hounds also honored seniors
Jennifer DeMotte,
Kelsey Rummel and
Hannah Atkinson prior to the game. As the winningest class in program history, the quartet has combined to help the Greyhounds to a stellar 164-42-1 (.795) record since 2010.
GAME ONE
Fittingly, Wittenauer and DeMotte accounted for all four RBIs in the opener. DeMotte plated a run with a double in the first inning and followed with an RBI single in the third.
With the Hounds still up by just two in the sixth, Wittenauer smoked a laser to center field, good for a two-run homer that afforded some breathing room for UIndy.
The insurance runs weren't needed, however, as DeMotte, who also started at pitcher, closed out the Bearcats with a one-two-three seventh. The Franklin Central product (21-0) recorded her ninth shutout of the season, allowing just three hits while striking out eight and walking none. She has yet to lose a game in the circle this season.
GAME TWO
The capper looked like another shutout for the Hounds until McKendree finally pushed across a run versus freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley in the top of the seventh. Nevertheless, Foley (23-2) picked up her GLVC-leading 23rd win. She K'd 13 Bearcats Sunday, part of 27 strikeouts for the freshman in two starts this weekend.
Wittenauer's second bomb of the day came in the second frame, putting UIndy up 1-0. She later amassed her fourth and fifth RBIs of the day with a two-run single in the third.
Casey Williamson also flexed her muscles in the third inning with her team-leading 12th homer of the season. She didn't bother stopping at first base in any of her three ABs, as the Bishop Chatard grad also smashed two doubles in game two.
UIndy hosts Saint Joseph's in a mid-week twin bill Wednesday, Apr. 24. First pitch from Baumgartner Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern.
