INDIANAPOLIS – After winning a school-record 38 consecutive games, the UIndy softball team endured its first loss in nearly two months by splitting a doubleheader with Saint Joseph's Wednesday afternoon at Baumgartner Field.  Following a convincing 12-1 win in the opener, the No. 1-ranked Greyhounds (45-3, 25-1 GLVC) brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning of game two, only to fall to the defending Midwest Region champs, 5-3.

GAME ONE
The Greyhounds hung three runs on the board in the very first inning Wednesday.  Sophomore Taylor Russell started the rally with an opposite-field home run, good for her ninth of the season and third in the last five games.

Sophomore Casey Williamson followed with a double off the wall, while seniors Jennifer DeMotte and Bailey Wittenauer each delivered an RBI single.

UIndy broke it open with nine runs in the third and fourth frames combined.  Krysta Bradford and Kelsey Rummel accounted for five RBIs in the two innings, with Bradford notching a two-out, two-run single in the third.

DeMotte (22-0) got the pitching win after allowing just one run in four innings of work.  Freshman Coryn Tirpak finished off the Pumas by pitching a scoreless fifth.

GAME TWO
The Pumas got on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first, marking the first time the Hounds trailed in 10 games.  Right fielder Williamson limited the damaged by gunning down a base runner at home plate.

Later, Saint Joseph's delivered its biggest blow in the third inning when senior Kristin Paris cranked a three-run homer to put the visitors up 5-0.

Meanwhile, Puma pitcher Megan Ramey (9-5) kept the UIndy bats guessing most of the game, allowing just one hit through the first six innings.

Still trailing by five, the Greyhounds finally got to Ramey in the seventh.  A leadoff walk from DeMotte and base hit from Alexa Alfaro brought the red-hot Bailey Wittenauer to the plate.  The Lewisville, Texas native, who had six hits and two homers in her previous 11 at bats, launched yet another fence-clearing missile to bring the Hounds to within a deuce.

The next two batters went quietly until Rummel singled to keep the Greyhounds alive, but sophomore pinch hitter Samantha Krcelich, who has 14 home runs in her brief college career, fell in an 0-2 hole and couldn't climb out, as her strikeout marked the end of both the game and UIndy's impressive win streak.

The Hounds' 38-game win streak goes down in the record books tied for the third-longest streak in NCAA Division II history.

UIndy looks to bounce back when it hits the road for the final weekend of the regular season.  The Hounds head to Lewis University Saturday and Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday; both doubleheaders are scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern.
