KENOSHA, Wis. – The No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a pair of wins at UW-Parkside Sunday. The Greyhounds (48-4, 27-2 GLVC) downed the Rangers by scores of 9-1 and 4-0, with freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley fanning an impressive 18 batters in game two.
GAME ONE
The Greyhounds jumped on Parkside (11-35, 8-24) for three runs in the first, thanks to three straight singles and a Ranger fielding error.
The real fireworks came in the sixth, however, when the Hounds combined for four extra-base hits on the way to four runs.
Samantha Krcelich and
Taylor Russell each had home runs, while
Casey Williamson added a triple and
Erika Goodwin a double.
Senior pitcher
Jennifer DeMotte (23-1) struck out nine while limiting the Rangers to two hits in the complete-game win.
GAME TWO
Foley's 18 Ks were the most by a Greyhound in a seven-inning game since 2001*. She struck out the side in five of the seven frames and had less than two strikeouts in just one. With zero walks and zero UIndy fielding errors, Foley (25-3) nearly notched her first collegiate perfect game if not for a double by Parkside's Kelynn Sporer in the fifth.
Her performance also upped her strikeout total to 284, good for a new UIndy single-season record.
Offensively, Russell continued her tear with three-run homer in the third inning. In the last three games, the St. Charles, Ill., native is 6-for-10 with nine RBIs and four home runs.
Freshman
Jenny Thompson accounted for the only other UIndy run with a solo shot in the fifth.
The Greyhounds finish the regular season with 48 wins – most in Division II. They will enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament, which starts Friday, May 3. The Hounds drew eighth-seeded Saint Jospeh's in round one.
