EVANSVILLE, Ind. –The UIndy softball team extended its win streak to 27 games Sunday with a pair of wins at Southern Indiana. The No. 1-ranked Greyhounds (34-2, 16-0 GLVC) shut out the Screaming Eagles in game one, then overcame a 1-0 seventh-inning deficit to down their hosts in extras in game two.
Nearly a year ago to the day, the Eagles (19-12, 9-9) snapped UIndy's program-record 33-game winning streak. The Hounds did not allow history to repeat itself Sunday, however, as USI managed just one run and four hits all day.
Freshman
Erika Goodwin went 5-for-9 with two runs and three ribbies in the two games combined, while senior
Jennifer DeMotte garnered the pitching win in both games.
GAME ONE
DeMotte was nearly flawless in the opener. The veteran hurler retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced, as a two-out single in the second inning accounted for the only USI base runner. DeMotte struck out five and walked zero while lowering her ERA to a microscopic 0.73 on the season.
In addition, DeMotte surpassed the school record for most career innings pitched Sunday, passing former Greyhound standout Beth Wendlinger.
After an RBI single by DeMotte gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead in the first inning, UIndy hung a four-spot on the board in the second. The team was a home run short of the cycle in the frame, as an RBI double from
Kelsey Rummel and a two-run triple by Goodwin fueled the rally.
GAME TWO
The Eagles struck first with a solo homer by junior Kelsey Jankowski in the fourth, marking the first time the Hounds trailed in a game in some 88 innings of play.
The score remained 1-0 Eagles until the top of the seventh when the Hounds finally got on the board. After a leadoff double from
Jenny Thompson and a sac bunt, an infield single by Goodwin scored pinch runner
Sydney Russell to keep the Hounds alive.
Later, UIndy put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth inning.
Taylor Russell,
Casey Williamson and DeMotte strung together consecutive RBI hits to put the host Eagles away.
DeMotte (16-0) notched the pitching win again, this time in relief. Starter
Morgan Foley struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings before DeMotte came on to get the final seven outs, including working a one-two-three ninth.
UIndy begins a 10-game home stand next weekend, starting with a doubleheader versus this same USI team Saturday, Apr. 13. First pitch from Baumgartner Field is scheduled for noon Eastern.
