Highlight VideoINDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team (5-1, 3-0 GLVC) lit up the Key Stadium scoreboard Saturday night, handing visiting McKendree a
52-7 defeat in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Greyhounds, who did not punt the ball all night, put up a season-high point total while limiting the Bearcats (0-6, 0-3) to just 186 yards of total offense.
The UIndy offense scored on every possession in the first half and eight of its nine overall. Barthel-to-Horn was the predominant theme, especially in the opening half, as the former high school teammates hooked up eight times for 157 yards in the first two quarters alone.
Â
Junior QB
Connor Barthel finished 17-for-22 with a season-high 312 passing yards and four touchdowns, while junior wideout
Reece Horn racked up 175 receiving yards and three TDs.
Â
The UIndy running game also clicked, as Barthel and three backs combined for 244 yards on the ground. Senior
Matt Ripp led the way with 104 yards on 17 carries, followed by
Aaron Bruning's personal-best 70 yards and
Andrew Walker's 59.
Â
Ripp added a pair of TDs, while Bruning found the end zone in the fourth quarter for his first career score.
Â
The UIndy defense was just a stellar, holding McKendree to just 113 passing yards and a mere 73 rushing. The Bearcats came up empty on its first eight drives before finally breaking through with a touchdown late in the game.
Â
McKendree had its best chance against the UIndy starters in the third quarter when the Bearcats advanced to the red zone. But on a 3rd & 5 at the UIndy 14-yard line, QB Issac Fisher was intercepted by senior linebacker
Eddie Antonietti at the goal line to end the threat.
Â
The Greyhound defensive line combined for four sacks on the night, as
Lee Campbell (1.5 sacks),
Tommy Taylor (1.0),
Russell Collins (1.0) and
Dillon Dallas (0.5) all got to the quarterback.
Â
Fresh off breaking the school's all-time scoring mark, senior kick
Scott Miller was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra points while adding a 29-yard field goal late in the first half.
Â
The Greyhounds have a tough task ahead as they travel to Truman State (4-2, 3-1) next week. Kickoff from Kirksville, Mo., is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Oct. 18.
Notes: UIndy moves to 18-0 all-time in GLVC play … Horn upped his career touchdown reception total to 21, good for fourth in the UIndy all-time annals. Barthel, meanwhile, moved up to ninth on the program's career passing TDs list with 30.Â
