AURORA, Ill. – Junior
Hailey Brown's monster performance Friday afternoon propelled UIndy past 15th-ranked Ferris State 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23) in the first day of action at the GLVC/GLIAC Mizuno Crossover.
Brown racked up 22 kills in the four-set victory, as the Greyhounds avenged a 3-1 loss to Ferris State earlier this season at the Tampa Classic (Sep. 6).
The Greyhounds (11-6, 9-2 GLVC) stormed out of the gates in the opening set, grabbing an early 10-2 lead en route to the win. Brown set the pace with five kills, and UIndy hit .237 as a team.
It was much of the same in the second set, with the Hounds hitting a sharp .297 against Ferris State's .156. Five Greyhounds tallied multiple kills during the set, helped in part by senior setter
Meghan Binkerd's distribution and 11 assists.
The Bulldogs (12-4, 10-2 GLIAC) turned the tables in the third set, narrowly winning 25-22 to stay alive.
UIndy closed the door in a hard-fought fourth set, and amassed six of its 14 total blocks during the game. Again it was Brown leading the offense with 7 kills in the match-clinching set, finishing with 22 for the day.
Three Greyhounds finished with 20-plus digs for the first time this season, led by reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week
Kimberly Trojan (25 digs), followed by
Arielle Knafel (22) and Binkerd (21).
Lynsey Hazelwood totaled 12 digs, helping UIndy reach a season-high 92 digs for the match.
Senior
Julia Watkins played a major role in disrupting the Bulldogs' attack, finishing with 3 solo blocks and 7 block assists. Knafel also tied a career high with 5 block assists. Â
The Hounds continue action in the Crossover Saturday against Hillsdale at 11 a.m. and Findlay at 5 p.m.
