Chargers pull off stunning comeback against Greyhounds, win 3-2

AURORA, Ill – The University of Indianapolis volleyball squad fell in their second match of the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover.

After defeating No. 15 Ferris State 3-1 Friday evening, UIndy looked to extend its winning streak to five matches against Hillsdale College Saturday morning.

Up 2-0, the Greyhounds were in line to do just that, until the Chargers won three consecutive sets to pull off a remarkable comeback and 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-7) decision.

Hillsdale (8-9, 6-5 GLIAC) put up a stiff defense down the stretch, accumulating 9 of its 11 blocks over the final three sets, including 4 in the decisive fifth game. The Chargers also converted 8 of 12 swings with only 1 error in the final set, good for a .583 attack percentage.

The Hounds' hitting percentage dropped from .284 in the first two sets to .172 across the last three.

Despite the team's late offensive struggles, sophomore Becca Lira racked up a career-high 16 kills, hitting .500 (16-2-28) to lead the Greyhounds. Redshirt-sophomore Hannah Bauer also set a new career mark with 12 kills, finishing with a .391 attack percentage (12-3-23).

Junior Hailey Brown finished the match with 12 kills, and senior Meghan Binkerd totaled 51 assists and 5 kills.

Defensively, Kimberly Trojan led the way with 18 digs, followed by Lynsey Hazelwood's 14 and Arielle Knafel's 10. UIndy amassed 7 team blocks, led by freshman Olivia Current, who finished with 2 solo and 2 assist blocks.

Current entered the match in the second set to replace an injured Julia Watkins. Prior to her untimely departure, Watkins was hitting a stellar .600 with 6 kills on 10 swings.

UIndy is back in action at 5 p.m. ET to face Findlay.
