INDIANAPOLIS – Celebrating homecoming at the University of Indianapolis, the UIndy volleyball squad vanquished visiting Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 24-26, 26-24) Saturday in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
Returning to Great Lakes Valley Conference action after four straight non-conference matches, the Greyhounds (13-8, 10-2 GLVC) solidified their spot atop the East Division along with Lewis.
Missouri-St. Louis (12-8, 7-5 GLVC) took a couple sets to warm up offensively. The Tritons hit just .027 across the first two sets, tallying 18 kills and 16 errors on 74 swings. On the other side, UIndy went 26-10-69 for a .232 attack percentage, and took the opening two sets rather handily, 25-17 and 25-13.
The third set was a different story, as it has been as of late for the Crimson and Grey. Over their last five contests, the Hounds have gone 12-3 combined in first, second and fourth sets, and just 1-4 in the third, being out-scored by an average of 24.4 points to 21.2.
Saturday, UMSL finally came to life down 2-0 by hitting .234 (16-5-47) and edged the Hounds 26-24 to extend the match.
The Tritons shot out of the gate in the fourth, taking an early 6-1 advantage, but UIndy eventually settled in and began a back-and-forth affair with the visitors. Down 23-22, the Hounds scored 4 of the next 5 points to seal the match victory.
UIndy's usual spread offense was on full display in the win, as eight different Hounds finished with 3 or more kills. In each of their last six victories the Greyhounds have had at least five separate players finish with 5 or more kills.
Hailey Brown led the team Saturday with 14, followed by
Becca Lira (10) and
Arielle Knafel (9).
Meghan Binkerd dished 46 assists in the four-set win.
Brown paced UIndy with 21 digs, with
Kimberly Trojan (18) and Knafel (16) also chipping in as the Hounds finished with 72 digs to UMSL's 55.
UIndy returns to action against GLVC West opponent Maryville Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
