INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy won its third consecutive match Sunday with a 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16) victory over visiting Maryville in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
The Greyhounds (14-8, 11-2 GLVC) left the Saints (14-10, 5-8) in the rearview mirror quickly in the opening set, scoring 9 of the first 11 points en route to a 25-11 win. UIndy hit .417 as a team on 12 kills, 2 errors and 24 attempts compared to MU's .037 (7-6-27).
Maryville turned the tables in the second frame, racing out to a quick lead much like the Hounds had in the first. UIndy again out-hit the Saints (.257 to .154), but trailed the entire set after falling behind 2-1. The Greyhounds made a push at the end of the set, closing the gap from 21-15 to 24-23, but the Saints took the set 25-23 to knot the match at 1-1.
The Hounds bounced back after the 10-minute intermission to regain control of the match with a 25-20 win in the third set.
Lynsey Hazelwood led UIndy with 4 kills in the set and three other Hounds finished with 3 kills apiece.
Up 2-1, the Crimson and Grey hit a sharp .306 (14-3-36) to close out the victory and send Maryville home with its second straight loss.
Arielle Knafel carried the Greyhounds down the stretch, totaling 6 kills and hitting .600 in the match-clinching game.
Knafel and
Hailey Brown each finished with 16 kills while hitting over .350, and Hazelwood followed with 11 kills on a .318 attack percentage. The Hounds' .308 team hitting finished as their fifth-highest mark of the season, and highest of any game with 55-plus kills.
Meghan Binkerd's 48 assists fueled UIndy's efficient attack. Â
Defensively,
Kimberly Trojan tallied 19 digs, followed by Knafel (15) and Hazelwood (11). After recording one kill/dig double-double in her first 14 contests, Knafel now has 4 in her last 7 matches. It marked Hazelwood's second double-double of the season.
Facing a short turnaround, the Greyhounds are back in action Tuesday at Saint Joseph's (9-14, 3-10) with the match scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET.
