Binkerd sets assist record in five-set loss to McKendree

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball squad suffered their first home defeat of the season in a gripping five-set match against the McKendree Bearcats Friday night.

The Bearcats (8-6, 5-3 GLVC) took the final two sets, and won the match 3-2 by scores of 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 28-26, and 15-12.

Amidst the back-and-forth thriller, senior Meghan Binkerd broke the school's all-time assist record, passing Beth Robbins' ('08) mark of 4,686 with her 13th assist of the night. Binkerd finished the match with 48 assists, cementing her place in the record books with 4,904 career assists nearly halfway through her senior season.

UIndy (7-6, 6-2 GLVC) won a scrappy opening set, 25-18, helped by McKendree's nine attack errors and -.028 hitting percentage. The Bearcats, however, fought back to tie the match with a 25-20 set-two victory.

Out of the gate in set three the Greyhounds commanded an early 8-2 lead, and went on to gain match control with a 25-21 win to put McKendree on the brink of defeat down 2-1. Up to that point it was the best set for the Hounds' collective attack, finishing with a .256 percentage on 16 kills, five errors and 43 attempts.

The Greyhounds then went toe-to-toe with the Bearcats in the fourth, and even put the 'Cats on match-point with a 24-22 lead. McKendree wound up taking six of the last eight points to force a final set.

In the fifth, McKendree was as efficient as it had been all night with a .375 attack (8-2-16), getting four kills from Arela Williams.

The Greyhounds were led in kills by Lynsey Hazelwood's 17 and Hailey Brown's 16, and got double-digit digs from Binkerd (19), Kimberly Trojan (18) and Arielle Knafel (17).

UIndy finished with 14 blocks, with Julia Watkins leading the way with two solo blocks and nine block assists. Becca Lira hit .312 (7-2-16) with a solo block and two block assists.

The Hounds return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. against Illinois Springfield in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
