Football downs Pumas in quadruple overtime

INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy's Scott Miller delivered a game-winning 35-yard field goal to lift the Greyhounds (8-1, 6-0 GLVC)  past the visiting Saint Joseph's Pumas Thursday night, 36-33, in the CBS Sports Network NCAA Division II Football Game of the Week. Miller's boot came at the end of the fourth overtime period as the game matched the longest contest in school history.

UIndy's thrilling win came in front of 6,033 fans at Key Stadium and was watched by thousands more on the nationally televised broadcast. The game was the seventh and final Division II football contest produced by CBS Sports Net this season as part of the network's partnership with the NCAA.

The Hounds found themselves trailing 17-10 late in the fourth, and with just five minutes left, they were stopped on 4th & 1 deep in Puma territory. But the UIndy defense stepped up by forcing a quick three-and-out, forcing a punt.

UIndy's ensuing drive went 50 yards in six plays, terminating in a game-tying touchdown by senior Logan Young. The Muncie, Ind., native's two-yard TD catch was set up one play earlier by his 27-yard reception.

The teams went toe-to-toe in the extra time, matching each other point-for-point in the first three OTs. Miller was true from 24 yards in the initial overtime period, while junior QB Connor Barthel called his own number on the next two scores, first on a draw and then a keeper to notch his first career two-rushing-touchdown game.

Following Barthel's second TD, the Pumas' all-conference bruiser, Braxton Shelton, punched in his fourth rushing touchdown of the night, as his two-yard plunge forced a fourth OT.

Saint Joseph's (6-3, 3-3) got the ball first but got no where on its first three plays, forcing a 42-yard FG attempt by Gavin Voss. But Voss, who had been money from 44 and 45 yards earlier in the night, saw the snap go low and his kick go wide, leaving the door wide open for the Hounds.

Needing only a field goal to win, two handoffs to Matt Ripp put the ball in the middle of the field on the 18-yard line. Head coach Bob Bartolomeo opted to kick it on 3rd down, giving his team a larger margin of error, but a clean snap from Alex Bobos and perfect kick from Miller made the decision moot, completing the comeback win and keeping the Hounds in sole possession of first in the GLVC standings.

Barthel racked up a career-high 339 passing yards while throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more. Young and Reece Horn combined for 16 catches for 107 and 86 yards, respectively, with each scoring a touchdown.  Ripp finished with a game-high with 164 all-purpose yards (81 rush, 61 rec, 22 ret).

Saint Joseph's, meanwhile, featured a relentless rushing attack, with four Puma ball carriers amassing nine or more carries. The quartet was led by Shelton's 110 rushing yards, followed closely by Kobi Cook's 106.

Defensively, five Greyhounds finished with double-digit totals in tackles, including Koby Orris (14), Eddie Antonietti (13), Jake Grossnickle (13), Josh Bass (11) and Rob Dury (10). Dillon Dallas had a massive 23-yard sack, Grossnickle and Lee Campbell each had two tackles for a loss, while Orris added his second interception in as many games.

Just two dates remain on the 2014 regular-season slate. The Greyhounds travel to Missouri S&T Saturday, Nov. 8 before hosting Senior Night versus William Jewell seven days later.

Notes:  The Greyhounds had been in two four-overtime games previously, but this was the first at Key Stadium and first win.  UIndy dropped a 39-36 heartbreaker at Ashland Sept. 10, 2011, and lost a 49-43 final at Hillsdale Aug. 28, 2004 – both in quadruple OT … A loss by William Jewell Saturday will clinch at least a share of the GLVC title for the Hounds … Offensive tackle Hayden Janney amazingly had is second reception of the season during the Hounds' game-tying drive in the fourth quarter when the Fishers., Ind., native corralled a deflected Barthel pass and barreled forward for eight yards ... Horn upped his career receiving yard total to 2,040, becoming just the seventh Greyhound ever to surpass the 2,000 mark ... Young's nine receptions for 107 yards set a pair of personal bests.
