Miller breaks scoring mark as Hounds down Quincy, 42-20

QUINCY, Ill. – On a sunny but chilly afternoon in western Illinois, the UIndy football team (4-1, 2-0 GLVC) notched a 42-20 conference road win at Quincy Saturday afternoon.  Amid a number of standout performances, senior Scott Miller ended the day with 282 career points, surpassing former-teammate Klay Fiechter as the program's all-time leading scorer.

Miller entered the day needing just one point to pass Fiechter.  His chance came less than five minutes into play after Reece Horn caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Connor Barthel early in the first.  Miller's point after was good, giving the Indianapolis native the record outright.

Meanwhile, Horn's day had just begun, as the junior wideout added two more TD catches before halftime.  The Hounds' top target hauled in scoring passes of 17, 19 and 51 yards in the first two quarters, with the latter featuring multiple broken tackles.  He finished with 10 receptions for 197 yards and three TDs, all season highs.

Horn's efforts helped UIndy build a 21-0 cushion, forcing the Hawks (2-3, 0-2) to play catch-up the entire game.  Quincy finally got on the board at the end on of the first half when sophomore Eric Poindexter corralled a 13-yard scoring pass from QB Nick Lonergan.  The Hounds blocked the extra-point attempt, however, as sophomore Tommy Taylor batted down the kick.

The Hounds started the second half with its fourth scoring drive.  UIndy drove 78 yards in 3:49, capped by a touchdown grab by Matt Sinclair.  The offensive-lineman-turned-tight-end garnered his first career TD with a four-yard catch in the back of the end zone.

Quincy managed a touchdown in each of the final two quarters but never got closer than 15 points.  Long TD runs by Andrew Walker (17 yards) and Matt Ripp (25 yards) helped keep the Hawks at arm's length.

The latter TD proved to be the clincher.  The Hawks had just scored to make it a two-possession game early in the fourth quarter and later forced a 3rd & 16 on the ensuing UIndy series.  The Hounds converted, however, with a 44-yard over-the-shoulder bomb to senior Logan Young, followed immediately by Ripp's 25-yard scoring rush.

The UIndy defense held Quincy to just 88 rushing yards and 223 total yards.  The Hawks were stuffed on four fourth-down attempts on the day, with one coming on a sack-fumble by junior Lee Campbell in the fourth quarter.

In addition, the Greyhound "D" ended the game by stopping Quincy on 10 consecutive downs from the UIndy five-yard line or closer.

Barthel amassed four touchdown throws and a personal-high 305 yards on 20-of-27 passing, while linebacker Rob Dury compiled a whopping 19 total tackles and Campbell had a career-high 10 stops, including two sacks.

UIndy returns to Key Stadium next week when it hosts McKendree University.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

Notes:  Miller is the second Greyhound in as many years to set a new UIndy all-time scoring mark.  Prior to 2013, Dick Nyers' benchmark of 272 career points stood for 57 years … senior safety John Strickland earned his first career sack by blowing up a second-quarter trick play by the Hawks, forcing an 11-yard loss … not only did the 284-pound Sinclair get his first career TD, but all-conference offensive tackle Hayden Janney secured his first career reception on a deflected pass in the third.
