QUINCY, Ill. – The UIndy volleyball squad was handed a 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) defeat at Quincy Saturday, marking the Greyhounds' first loss to the Hawks in over 14 years.
For the first time since September 2000, the Hawks came away with a victory over UIndy. Entering Saturday's bout, the Greyhounds (15-9, 12-3 GLVC) held a 13-8 all-time series lead over Quincy, winning all 13 matches in a row from 2001-2013 after dropping the first eight meetings from 1993-2000.
The Hawks (9-17, 4-11) led nearly the entire first set, using a 5-0 spurt to build an early 10-5 lead they would not relinquish. Quincy's Carly Schmitt and Bekah Raebel each netted 5 kills in the first frame to lead all players and help the hosts take the set 25-18.
UIndy and Quincy went toe-to-toe in the second set, but a late push gave the Hawks a two-set edge. With the squads tied at 22 apiece,
Lynsey Hazelwood stuffed Raebel's attack at the net for a solo block. After a Quincy timeout, Raebel returned the favor with a solo block on Hazelwood's attack, and the Hawks capped the frame with two straight kills to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead.
Facing a three-set sweep, the Greyhounds gritted out a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the third game. It was the only set UIndy hit over .200 for the match, helped in large part by
Lynsey Hazelwood's 5 kills and .571 attack percentage.
Quincy sealed the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, capitalizing on the Hounds' .048 attack percentage (10-8-42).
UIndy's .153 attacking was the third-lowest of the season, as Quincy managed 13 team blocks and 73 digs.
Hazelwood finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, and
Hailey Brown had 11 kills and 14 digs.
Meghan Binkerd totaled 41 assists and 13 digs.
Kimberly Trojan led the Greyhounds with 16 digs, followed closely by
Arielle Knafel's 15 digs.
UIndy will need to regroup for a match against Midwest Region-leading and 23rd-ranked Truman State Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
