Greyhounds stun 23rd-ranked Bulldogs in 3-0 sweep

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Less than 24 hours after falling in four sets at Quincy the UIndy volleyball squad bounced back to drop 23rd-ranked Truman State 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 35-33) Sunday to wrap up the Greyhounds' regular season road slate.

The Bulldogs (23-3, 15-1 GLVC) hadn't lost since Sep. 6, winning 21 matches in a row to take the top seed in the initial Midwest Regional rankings and sit atop the GLVC standings. The visiting Hounds spoiled their streak to improve to 16-9 overall and 13-3 in the conference.

"We showed great composure today after a rough outing yesterday against Quincy," head man Jason Reed said following the victory. "We've talked about how much ability this group has and they showed it today."

The Greyhounds came out with a purpose in the opening set, winning 25-23. Senior Arielle Knafel converted 12 attacks for 6 kills to lead UIndy.

The Bulldogs fought back in the second set, taking a 23-21 lead in an attempt to even the match score. UIndy rallied for four straight points, however, including kills from Knafel, Hailey Brown and Kacee Salyers to put the nationally-ranked hosts on the ropes with another 25-23 set win.

After the 10-minute intermission the third set turned into an incredible back-and-forth between the two squads. UIndy and Truman traded points well past the 25-point mark, but the Hounds finally put away the 'Dogs with a combined block from Becca Lira and Knafel followed by a final kill from Lira to clinch the match, 35-33.

Salyers totaled a career-high 13 kills, turning in the best offensive performance of her young collegiate career. Knafel (13 kills) and Brown (11) also tallied double-digit kills. Meghan Binkerd dished 46 assists and finished with 13 digs to record her team-leading 15th double-double of the season.

Knafel added 14 digs to mark her fifth kill/dig double-double, and Brown's 12 digs equaled her 10th double-double of the year. Kimberly Trojan finished with 25 digs, tied for her third-highest total of the season.

"Everyone played well and did their job, and that's what it will take for continued success," Reed noted. "I'm very proud of the team today. It was a great performance."

The win bumped the Greyhounds' record versus ranked teams to 2-4, and also marked the 11th sweep of the season.

UIndy wraps up the regular season next weekend with a homestand against Southern Indiana Friday at 7 p.m. ET and Bellarmine Saturday at 3 p.m.
