Women's basketball falls 88-49 in exhibition opener at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Kelly Walter scored 26 points and sophomore-transfer Nicole Anderson added 10 in the Greyhounds' 88-49 exhibition loss at Indiana Sunday afternoon.

In their first contest of the season, the Hounds managed to shoot 16-for-48 (33.3%) against their Division I counterparts, who went 33-66 for an even 50% clip. The Hoosiers outrebounded UIndy 45-30, and dominated points in the paint 46 to 18.

The matchup was each side's first of the season, allowing the coaches and fans alike to get a glimpse of two young squads. There are 19 true freshmen and sophomores between the two teams, including nine from UIndy.

The Hounds' starting lineup featured three returners, however, including the three-point threat Walter. The program's eighth-leading three-point shooter of all-time finished 5 for 13 from long range.

Anderson, a transfer from Miami (OH), scored her 10 points in 24 minutes, adding 7 rebounds.

The Hoosiers grabbed an early 13-4 lead by the first media break, shooting 60% from the field. Eight straight points from Walter – a pair of three-pointers and a floater in the lane – cut the deficit to 16-12 by the second media break. She sank another triple prior to the under-8:00 media, making it 20-17.

UIndy got within two points at 24-22 with five minutes left in the half, but a 17-5 IU run down the stretch made it 41-27 at the break.

Indiana managed to force 9 Greyhound turnovers in the opening half, and outscored UIndy 20-10 in the paint. The Hoosiers finished the half shooting an even 50% from the floor (15 for 30), helped in large part by a 5-for-7 mark in the final five minutes.

IU extended its lead in the second half, pushing out to a 66-47 advantage by the midway mark, its highest of the game to that point. UIndy hit just three field goals in the first 10 minutes to the Hoosiers' eight.

The hosts controlled much of the action in the second half, outpacing the Hounds in field goals (18 to 6), rebounds (27 to 15) and steals (8 to 1). IU converted 11 UIndy turnovers into 21 points.

Carly Lythjohan led the Hounds with 10 boards, and Princess German played 25 minutes and totaled 8 points.

Newcomers Devin Ferguson, Sarah Costello, Ashley Montanez, Marlena Muszak, Tina Negoescu and Brooke Leins each saw action for the first time in Greyhound uniforms.

Victoria Schaefer (19 minutes) and Emily Alfrey (9) also received playing time Sunday.

UIndy held Larryn Brooks scoreless until the 5-minute mark in the first half, when the Hoosiers' 2013-14 leading scorer sank a three-pointer for her only bucket of the game. Freshman guard Tyra Buss matched Walter's 26 points to lead the home team.

The regular season begins in just five days for the Greyhounds, who travel to Detroit to face Wayne State Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
