game notes* as of Dec. 16ON TAPAfter a 10-day layoff, No. 12 UIndy puts its undefeated record on the line when it travels to Miami Shores, Fla., for a pair of games at the Cruzin' Classic. The Greyhounds kick things off with a showdown versus ninth-ranked and host Barry University Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
After Thursday's meeting with Daemen College Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET, the Hounds will ship off for a three-day Caribbean cruise.
ABOUT BARRYLike UIndy, Barry enters the Cruzin' Classic with a spotless record, having won each of its first six contests. The Buccaneers, led by second-year head coach Butch Estes, are ranked No. 9 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II poll. Junior Yunio Barrueta leads the team in scoring (16.5 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (7.7 rpg). The East Tennessee State transfer is shooting 53 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc.
In Estes' first season at the helm, Barry secured its fourth-ever NCAA Tournament berth last March. The Buccaneers earned the sixth seed in the South Region before falling 82-77 to third-seeded Delta State in the first round.
GREYHOUNDS vs. BUCCANEERSUIndy holds a 2-1 advantage in the brief history versus Barry. The Hounds won the last meeting,
67-57, on a neutral court in Boca Raton, Fla., Dec. 18, 2010. The win came in
Stan Gouard's second season as the Greyhound head man. Current-UIndy-assistant Paul Corsaro compiled three rebounds and two assists for the Hounds, while then-true-freshman
Brennan McElroy was credited with a brief appearance.
The Hounds took the only previous meeting in Miami Shores, coming in a 73-55 final Nov. 27, 1999. The Buccaneers earned their only victory in the series to date with a 44-43 win in Boca Raton Dec. 21, 2002.
Tuesday marks the first game versus a ranked opponent this season for both teams.
GLASS EATERSBoth UIndy and Barry have out-rebounded their respective opponents in every game heading into Tuesday's match-up. The Buccaneers rank seventh in Division II in rebounding margin (+12.0 rpg), while the Hounds rank 11th (+11.0 rpg).
ABOUT DAEMENDaemen is in its third and final transition year from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) to NCAA Division II. A provisional D-II member in 2014-15, the Wildcats are playing a full D-II schedule this season as members of the East Coast Conference but will not be eligible for postseason play until 2015-16.
The Wildcats are led by 6-7 senior Gerald Beverly. The 2013-14 East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year averages a double-double at 19.4 points and 12.4 rebounds per game while also racking up 3.4 blocks per night.
GREYHOUNDS vs. WILDCATSThursday brings the first-ever meeting between UIndy and Daemen.
LAST TIME OUTThe Hounds opened conference play with a decisive
99-64 win at in-state Saint Joseph's Dec. 6. Senior
Joe Lawson led all players in both points (18) and rebounds (8) while the Greyhounds shot a lofty 62 percent from the field. See page 11 for a recap and box score.
AND THEN THERE WERE THREEWith second-ranked Bellarmine falling in overtime over the weekend, just three GLVC teams remain undefeated. UIndy (7-0) is joined by Southern Indiana (6-0) and Missouri-St. Louis (8-0) as the only unbeaten teams in the conference.
Bellarmine's first loss of the season came at home to third-ranked Florida Southern, 101-96, Sunday. Drury, UW-Parkside, Lewis and McKendree also have just one loss to date.
POLL POSITIONUIndy climbed four spots to No. 12 in the latest
NABC/Division II men's basketball rankings, released Dec. 9. Look for the updated poll to come out Tuesday Dec. 16.
#1 in D2Junior point guard
Lucas Barker tops all Division II players with 8.9 assists per game, edgeing second-place Ryan Fleming (8.3 apg) of Christian Brothers.
Â
Meanwhile, senior
Brennan McElroy ranks second in country in field goal percentage at .768. That number has lifted his career total to .704, good for the highest mark in program history.
As a team, the Greyhounds are obviously tied for the Division II lead in winning percentage (1.000), but the Hounds also rank highly in the country in scoring margin (2nd, 27.0 ppg), assists per game (2nd, 22.1 apg) and field goal percentage (4th, 54.5%).
BOMBS AWAYUIndy drained 11 3-pointers in the win at Saint Joseph's, marking the fourth time the team has hit at least 10 triples on the young season. Only five of the team's 29 games last year featured 10 or more treys, even with
Reece Cheatham on the roster, the program's fifth-most prolific 3-point shooter.
LAYING DOWN THE LAWSenior
Joe Lawson had a historic defensive effort in the Hounds'
21-point win versus Grace College Nov. 19. The Indy native swatted seven Lancer shots, matching the program record for most blocks in a game. The only other time a Greyhound amassed that many blocks was when Steve Kahl rejected seven shots versus Bellarmine in 1977.
