INDIANAPOLIS-Â On opening night of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season, the UIndy men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie with visiting William Jewell, in a match that went two overtimes Friday night at Key Stadium.
The Greyhounds (0-1-2; 0-0-1 GLVC) struck first, with
Julian Shamsaie's first goal of the year. Jules took a ball from
Ngwese Ebangwese on the far side and sent it past the Cardinal keeper. William Jewell (0-2-1; 0-0-1 GLVC) would knot the match at 1-1 with 27 seconds to play in the first half, on Aaron Froehlich's first goal of the year.
Neither team could score the game winner in regulation, sending the match to extra minutes. After two 10-minute overtimes, the final stood at a 1-1 draw. UIndy led the Cardinals 28-12 overall in shots on the night, with the Greyhounds also taking 11 corner kicks to WJC's three. Ebangwese and
Patrick O'Brien led the Greyhound attack with six shots each.
Andrew Verhonik made four saves in 110 minutes in the goal for UIndy.
The Greyhounds host Rockhurst Sunday, in a rematch of last season's GLVC Soccer Championship Tournament final. First kick is slated for 2:30 p.m. from Key Stadium.
